Agreed!

CUD leaders in prison have finally agreed to sign the proposal sent by Meles last week. If Meles doesn't, as he usually does, back down from his own proposal, our heroes will be out of prison next week. There are additional lines in the proposal including that the partial acceptance of responsibility and admission of mistake have no legal consequences.
This is a political agreement. Meles has got his face-saving agreement, and the prisoners have in turn got his admission that the court was wrong. And more; their release from the rotten concentration camp called Kaliti. Still we don't know whether Meles who is a serial breaker of agreements will uphold this one.
(fingers crossed...or may be not)

I thank the P.M. for his wisdom in allwing these unwise men a face saving exit.

We know who made all the crimes. It doesn't matter whatever letter our leaders sign. They should do anything to get out of that hell they are living only because of the fabricated allegations of woyane. Our leaders are crystal clear of any crime. Meles wasthe commander-in-chief and so he is the man who master minded the mass killing.

The struggle continues.

Great News! Thanks a lot again. There is a huge potential that is remaining untapped due to lack of leadership. The leaders of the so called support groups do not have the necessary focus. Yes, they are committing their resources and lives to this movement. That shows that they mean well. But good intentions are not enough. I am tired of the unnecessary wrestling these people are engaged in. They spend too much time digging dirt about the other. They are quick to blame each other. Look their sites. You won't find any relevant information. What is a group which is not even as good as a part-time blogger? I sometimes wonder what they would do to each other if they had guns and prisons!
I hope all will go well. The true leaders will get to reorganize their supporters to bring peace, unity, and economic prosperity in Ethiopia.

good job seminalwork.. great job Prof. Isac and friends. I hope this is good for every one of them. regarding the guilty claim (be it by court or by what they said), i am sure both party's know the answer, those kids, whose mom was gunned down while protesting the detention of her husband knows the answer, that 14-years old who was shot from behind might know the answer, above all God knows the answer.

Hagos,

With all due respect to you, you have no right whatsoever to call the brightest children of Ethiopia in Kality as unwise. Infact people like you who promote hate and animosity between people are the cause of all misery in our beloved Ethiopia. I would say to you please think twice before you speak once. ( Libona Yistih geta!!). I think it is a great shame that you come from the land where great Ethiopians like Emperor Tewodros, Emperor Yohanes, Emperor Menilik, Etege Taytu, The great generals like Alula Aba Nega, Gebeyehu, Gobena etc. God bless Ethiopia!!!

I am retreiving sources what the agreement says in a ball park:

As sources told us following Dr Berhanu and w/ro Birtukan plea, a letter of guilt and asking for forgiveness was drafted by members of Kinijit and handed to Professor Efrem. Sources told us Dr Moges has been the main contact person from North America. The letter in summary says the following. "…We the leaders of Kinijt at Kaliti acknowledge our responsibility during election 1997 and regret we were involved in the violence that ensued the election and regret we tried to topple government by illegal means. We ask the government of Ethiopian and Ethiopian people for forgiveness and we will not be involved in such activities any more"

I am losing hope they will be able to continue the struggle for freedom and Democracy. So many died believing the struggle for freedom and Democrcay was a just cause. Finally, they were betrayed by the very leaders they accept as the elected leaders of the country. I think Kihdetu Ayalew may have been justified as well as the TPLF organization has finally got what they asked for. They used intimidation coersion to get patrial responsibility from the people aho have not done anything.

I have to switch my support for those who are active in the jungles of Ethiopia killing the enemy day-in day-out. I am very sorry that the struggle was betrayed by the leaders. The same leaders finally have ligitimize TPLF as the proper government for the country. That is what they have essentially done, by admiting to the deaths of thousands and the imprisonments of tens of thousands and the killing of the youths by TPLF sharp shooters. This is a bad day for Ethiopia, and a sad day for those who have lost their family members.

Nelson Mandella has held out for years (12-years) after presented the same deal and refused to take it and finally he was crowned the leader of South Africa. I am not sure Eng. Hailu Shawel could lead the country to freedom and Democracy. It shows selfishness from his part if he has signed for the deal highlighted above.

Parallels with the South African Treason Trials
..............................
About half a century ago, the Apartheid government of South Africa rounded up 156 people including almost the entire leadership of ANC - its President, Chief Albert Luthuli, Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu and other opposition groups, trade unionists, prominent lawyers. The detainees also included four publishers of news papers and periodicals and two lawyers who had consulted with the prisoners. The principal charge against all of them was a conspiracy to overthrow the state and establish communism..........
Pleas read Dr. Dadimos Haile's testimony on www.ethiomedia.com
Our leaders have shown what they stand for, Democracy, Equaity, & Unity with Peaceful methods.

hagos, cud leaders are released not because your prime minster is a wise man. But it is the great pressure he faced from outside and inside. specially melss is afraid of the coming Ethiopian millinium civil disobedience. this is the only exit option he has, otherwise he will face the consequences. Meles has never been, will never be a wise man. But one thing is true. He is good at TENKOL, KILLING, TORTURING, LYING,MISINFORMING.

GOOD BE WITH OUR BELOVED LEADERS

TPLF has been legitimized by this deal and it will continue to invade other countries like it did Somalia and justify that it is following what the people want. This is a bad deal for our leaders.

If the report is true, it is good news that the "prisoners of conscience" will at least be freed from jail. Why a sudden change of mind by Meles only a few days after the court's ruling is mysterious. Nevertheless, there should be no let up in the struggle for freedom & liberty. This is only the beginning. Samuel

Anonymous said...

But even under Apartheid, Mandela and his colleagues were free on bail while their treason charges were considered as Mandela recounts in his autobiography “Mandela”… Happy to know these great Ethiopians are about to reclaim their deserved freedom.

Anonymous said...

If the political prisoners are really freed in this manner, it is a huge success for them.

From the very time they were sent to prison, they had made it clear that this was a political problem (which required political negotiations) and not a legal one. They refused to defend themselves in court and they also refused to acknowledge the impartiality/independence of the court especially on this matter. They stood firm by their stance and, with increasing pressure by Ethiopians from all over the world, Inshallah, Meles has to give up his drama and give in to the demands of the opposition leaders.

Whatever the contents of the agreement, the whole world not only knows what has happened but the world also knows that confessions/agreements made in prison by arm-twisting and between unequal parties has serious limitations. In short, that agreement will have the sole purpose of freeing unjustly held political prisoners and cannot be used against them in any manner whatsoever.

This may be the only face-saving option for Meles, but it is a huge victory for the opposition.

When dictators start making concessions, it is the beginning of their downfall. Let us not get the impression that our dictator is benevolent... dictatorship is dictatorship! (The fact that Meles has the powers to free political prisoners that have been sent to prison by a so-called 'independent' court further proves that this is no democracy but a dictatorship). Let this serve us to further strengthen the struggle for freedom. It is only the beginning.

La lutta continua!!

I am sick and tired of the Millennium crap. This is the hype the current regime tries to use to satisfy the Diaspora hodams. It is a holiday invented by ferenjoch. For ordinary Ethiopians, it’s Enqutatash/another new year especially in a country where >70% illiterates. I thought we say we never colonized, completely wrong; we may not be physically colonized, but mentally worst than those have been under colony. All we cherish is the ferenji stuff, undermining ours. Yes, it may be a big holiday for the Black American sefer (Bole), not for the >85% who don’t know what their next mill will be. Yes, it may be big holiday for those who consider Ethiopia = Addis Ababa. Think again, get out of the self denial.

As of the signing of the paper, this the saddest day for Ethiopia. I pray to my almighty to take a country called Ethiopia out of my mind, to make me focus on raising my child, and think of my close family only. Getaye, I did my best, I didn’t betray my heroine, ShiBire and others.

Great News.

As usual the devil is in the details.

Meles and/or TPLF want to rule Ethiopia for eternity by any means. We have no idea yet what their plan B is, may be joining EPLF as Seghat Nega hinted recently. Time and again Meles has shown that he never negotiates in good faith.

We don't have any choice, but trust the CUD leaders with their judgment. They are the ones who rotted in jail and they have been screwed everytime they agreed to a negotiated settlement with the tyrant.

The goal is democracy and justice in Ethiopia and the release of the leaders is just one small chapter. If we forget this, we are doomed ones again.

Dear EZ,

Thanks for the update.

Hagos - you need "Tsibel" to cure you from the infectious disease called ethnic hate you got from TPLF.

For all of you "Poltical Exprerts out there"!! You seems to get intosticated by the release of our leaders by leaving democracy and the rule of law at the back burner.

That is exactly where Melese want us to be. Talking about the release of prisoners but not about the stolen vote. Don't you know that the CUD is banned as a poltical party in Ethiopia?

What is life for Hailu Shawel and the leaders with out the freedom of the Ethiopian people? Our country is dispeacbly backward and we are a laughing stock around the world because of people like Mengistu and Melese. In the world of abundunt food and resoruces - we can't even feed ourselves. Not because we are lazy but the so called leaders won't allow us our freedom to work and create. 17 years to be ruled by one ignorant brick head human being! My god!

The CUD leaders should have held their ground and wait for the tyrannt to come up with a more acceptable reconcilation proposal. He would as the tyrannt has no choice - he is finished.

At least he should have been forced to agree for a free and fair election with in a year at the presence of the int'l community - by allowing the CUD to particpate.

Simply put, the CUD leaders are APOLOGIZING to some entity. What is that entity? The same Ethiopian government they said they would not recognize as legitimate. The same court system that they dubbed Kangaroo like. Well it is the same Kangaroo that you are apologizing to. I am not really sure how they rationalize such actions. Be that as it may, better late than never. Yetime Fitchewe Duketune Ametchewe kind of deal. They waited until they were found guilty so that their status as "heroes" will be maintained. The deal that was unable to be worked out all this time suddenly is getting a boost because SENTENCING IS FAST APPROACHING AND REALITY KICKS IN. I got it Mr. Shwawel. Your apology is not accepted by me personally. HAGOS.

For PATRIOT's comment posted at 9:55 AM above,

This is not aigaforum. This is a forum for those who are posting true information and comments about true democracy; not fabricated information like you posted. The good thing is we know our leaders; we know Dr. Berhanu and Birtukan very well. You have tried to separate some of the leaders based on untruth and fabricatd information, like you did with Kihedetu. This is not new for Ethiopians; Meles and his gangs are doing the same thing to the whole country the past 16 years and you have tried to do the same thing with the situation of the CUD leaders. I am amazed this time how you categorize Birtukan with Dr. Berhanu. You were saying she is a hardliner like Eng. Hailu. If you don't talk the truth, you can not keep saying the same thing.

Great point. But, how do you realize democracy and the rule of law? What did you bring to fraying pan to realize that? It is easy to make normative statements. The support groups are mismanaged and in disarray and the confidence and spontaneity in the individual supporter’s heart are about to be sniffed out. So it is imperative that the leaders are free to rekindle the spirit… whatever deal they make, it is a great deal --- I know they know better than I do

It is a great news that finally the patriots of Ethiopia will be free. It took five years under the Italian colonizers and this time less from the Con Artist Meles and co. Like it's been said the Gin is out of the bottle, Ethiopians declared their bill of rights long ago written by one of our dearest leaders Birtukan from Kaliti.. Kinijit is a spirit! Melese and co. no matter how they perfect their art, they are always behind the game. The game is over.. good bye!

Regarding the deal I am very happy. It is a win-win deal. Both sides got something positive. In life you don't get 100% what you wish or plan to get. Life is full of compromise, specially if you are in politics.
For those who are not happy with the deal and therefore with the Kinijits leaders in jail,Please put yourself in thier shoe and think for a second how painful it is even to remain one day in jail let alone for years. It is really unfair to say them as a "betrayal". And also let us ask ourselves what have we done so far to these poor people? Let us be fair when we judge people. For me these guys have sacrified more than anybody who assume him/herself "Hager wodad" but in reality not willing to contribute a dime for these people families for a lame reason.
For those who support the government like Mr Hagos: when are we gonna learn how to learn? when are we gonna be ready to live for our mind rather than for our temporary benefit be it financially or whatever. Are you not guys be happy when peace is flourishing in our poor country? Why all these hatred? Let us atleast appreciate this deal and forget the past instead of badmouthing people.

Thanks once agin to thses heroes people who sacrifies thier time ,life etc for us! We Ethiopians always remeber you.

What Next?!

Is this the Undoing of CUD?

Which ever way you may spin it, the acceptance of any deal that implicated the leaders in the masacres, couldn't be with out its consequences.

We may for ever have lost the chance to prosecute Meles for his crime, now that the CUD leaders accepted partial responsibility for that crime.

Now they are tainted by their own admission would they be held at the same public esteem? Would that aura of dignity and integrity in the face of Woyane's brute and savagery be left intact after this agreement?

What have we gained? Why the prison time? Why the deaths? and why the tears? Now they agreed to accept partial responsibility, wouldn't all these sacrifices be in vain?

Besides, now in the eyes of the world, the agreement implies the CUD leaders are part of a crime against us, their own people. And when the day comes for prosecution, we have no choice but include CUD leaders as partners in a crime.

Suddenly, Meles is now the one who told the truth all along. He insisted, they were the instigators of the killings; look, now they admitted. He is off the hook.

This probably may go down in history as the undoing of a popular party.

To the Primie Minister Meles Zenawi and his friends, I say also thank you. Thank for listening to the people. Thank you for listening to the world. Thank yoo for listening to the good elements among yourselves.

the anon who sayed "I pray the Almighty to take a country called Ethiopia out of my mind"

I come to encourage you;we are the one who call ourselves the people of that land.True there are many things that are appalling about the behavior of ,the majourity of, educateted Ethiopians. Not only are we seen as you said "Hodams" but are opportunists of the worst kind.We know very well the state of our people;if we don't take any immidiate action the country will be lost for ever. Know this, that country has allways been rescued not by professors, or Ph.d's but by brave men and women;who have little or no knowledge about leadership teory, but by people who have great faith in the living God and love for their country.Inshort, we need strong leaders that will bring this country back to its respected place.
We can not wast time any more;we need home based leaders, who can bring the different self centered diaspora political groups together. We need leaders comprised of the various sectors of our society: that may include religious leaders, women, farmers, the working class and the professionals. We need people from the various groups of our socity;begining from the Oromos and in between and the smallest the Anuake. We need to discourage the notion of forming leadership solely made up of professors and Ph.d's.It is a fact, that tis class of people will never put their life on the line of duity. They value their life more than any thing else: hence, they are ever vacillating;they will wat until the final moment arrives to make any commitment:that is until all things are r to enable them secure their maximum advantage.
This is all known by us ;we have seen it in our own eyes.It is not that Ethiopians are unwilling to take a stand for the truth;we are unable to produce self sacrificing leaders.may be we have been expecting this class or that .. people will come out and carry the role of leading:that has not take place because of self interest. We need to change our perception about the whole thing.Instead of expecting some one will do this for mama, what about making it my own duity to see this happen in practice; what can I do for her need to be my insistence;we need not to look any where:only continue to raise the issue of rescuing Ethiopia from every angle, and never stop until the number of like minded grow as to give birth to our quest.
So,I encourage you to shake your gloom ,and see far that there are many ,who can not rest unless they see the day light of freedom shining in Ethiopia."You say you did not betray Your heroine".Yet, youseem to be removing your self from responsiblity.I dare to challenge you to reconsider your act.Think of the millions of Ethiopians ,and the deplorable condition they are in,think also in this line of thought ,if we fail to do any thing now, what will be the future?
Let us all of stop being callous, indifferent, and insensitive to the people who have seen so much.I specially appeal to the provincial Ethiopians, that you have a unique responsiblity to make a difference for your country. We need leaders who can lead us to liberate our country through the means of armed struggle.Let us not sleep until we see the desire of our heart.

IF THE NEWS POSTED BY EZ IS TRUE:

Then, today will be recorded in the Ethiopians contemporary history as a terribly sad day for many Real-Ethiopian families, families that lost their loved ones for TPLF AGAZI SECURITY SHARP SHOOTERS PRACTICING THE NEWLY LEARNED SKILLS from rooftops. I will not blame Ethiopian Youths if they do not want to fight anymore. I do not blame them if they do not want to do participate to support Democractic processes anymore, I think they were betrayed by their leaders signing this agreement.

This day will be remembered as the sadest day in Ethiopian history, a day in which self indulgence was upheld over principle and righteousness. While all the youths died for principle and a just cause their leaders abandoned that same principle the youths were bound by. Today is a day in which betrayl has been allowed to reign supreme in Ethiopian political arena. We thought the badest day was when Kihdetu converted to TPLF-MP, that can easily be overshadowed by the biggest betrayal ever, abandoning principle. Khidetu Ayalew may have been aware of these leaders' heart more than we were. I suppose he did the right thing when he converted to TPLF horse to save himself. I guess he was well aware of their inner falter and beat them before they beat him to save his skin. I no longer single out and condemn Lidetu Ayalew as all the CUDP leaders are all the same sneaky S.O.Bs. What the CUDP leaders did is by far the worse 1000x more worse than what Lidetu Ayalew did. I no longer condemn what Solomon Tekalign has done, for he too was aware of the wobly hearts of the CUDP leadership, and what they did is 10000x more worse.

Today's agreement is a referendum and affirmation for TPLF to continue its strong hold onto power. The power which was crumbling will be restored by tioday's agreement. TPLF's power held by strings will be strengthened by today's agreement. Todays agreement if true will sell MOTHER ETHIOPIA knowingly to the enemy. Leaders are NOT supposed to falter, they have to show moral strength and unflinching stand, for what they are doing is RIGHT, CUDP Leaders in particular are supposed to be holding their heads high when the situation calls for it. What they have done today can only be considered as self selrving and self saving at the expense of 200-dead youth, 800-wounded Ethiopians and 1000s more jailed and lost their lives in jail. Many family are waiting to be told their children killers' are coming to court, but instead they are going to be told their children died for the worng reason and their killers are going to be exonerated. This will send a shock wave throughout Ethiopia and in the Ethiopian Diaspora communities throughout the world. I, for one will consider this day as the day of Ethiopia's death.

I cannot believe that just to be dancing for a one day (millennium) they have to abandon their principle. Like someone said it here on EZ Millennium is a white invention trick to hipe peoples' emotion to use is a factor into this case, for majority of Ethiopians (95%) it is another new years day.

Unfortunately, it was made as a good day for TPLF and their supporters. While it is a sad day for 95% Real-Ethiopians it is a day of celebration for TPLF, they will have many reason to celebrate the Millennium. How can you not celebrate when you MURDER unarmed group of kids and you say you 'had no choice' and the court says "you are free!" TPLF got their way once more, they murder many people and they exonerate themselves by sharing responsibility with those innocent CUDP leaders because we have accepted them as our representatives, and their poor judgment reflects on us.

I understand admission of partial responsibility is literally not good. But it is a better decision on account of 3 reasons:
1. The political prisoners are forced psychologically during the 'agreement'.
2. They will be outside of Kaliti
3. Though they accepted the interest of majority Ethiopians and as a result were imprisoned, the Ethiopians' struggle to release the prioners was not sufficient.
The struggle for better democracy, development and prosperity shall/must continue.

Patriot,

Whom are you talking about? Who are the 'us'?

I sinserely hope you are not a person. It is my wish that you are a collection of writings compiled together to defuse the hope of peace and reconciliation. You are the collective ideas of those that cannot survive in multi-ethnic equality of Ethiopia. For us, the blockade is soon to be removed.

God is our witness... if the law of the land does not judge the real criminals... the God of heaven will surely pay them their dues. But we senserely pray that they repent of their sins before the appointed time.

Let us pray for peace... accomodation... moderation... and a positive future. A future where we do not need external moderator and we decide to put out the fire ourselves. For a day when we will put people in Office by our own vote and remove them when they mis-behave.

in love you my country and with much prayer...

I agree with "patriot," if they did not sign the agreement and TPLF kills them we will have the reason to come after TPLF leadership no matter where they go and the world would have extradite them should they get away elsewhere but now we are left with nothing, I feel sorry for the dead students and their families, their death will be forgotten in the agreement. Man we almost had them by throat, this agreement will somehow allow them to get away scath free. That is a bumer.

They Should kill them, they are criminals!

If that is the decision they chose, then it is. In the mean time, to have an official and final release of document to the public will be forth coming from the regime and the soon to be released thirty eight/nine prisoners of conscience.

EZ,

Thank you for the follow up and up date.

It is a great news. Thanks to all Ethiopians and the international communities and also to the UEDP-Medhin MPs who put pressure on the regime.

Patriot,

How much are you paid to write all these negative attitudes towards the agreement? you must be one of the damn people under the umbrella of Woyane who can't survive by themselves. The release of the CUD leaders should be a bad news for you and the like because they will start developing the system of accountability in the country in the near future (I mean the real accountability). So, guys like you will not have any where to go except the rotten Kaliti. There is no any time that DEDEB appreciate any efforts of intelligent people like CUD leaders.

To the Zagol team
Now that your leaders have agreed to accept responsibility for the senseless violence they caused, it is now your turn to apologize publicly for tarnishing my country's image. We at TPLF (I mean EPRDF) truly believe in the rule of law, but at the same time we forgive those who show remorse. Fellow Zagolians! our arms are open, accept guilt, show remorse and come back to us. On behalf of TPLF (sorry EPRDF) I tell you this: this is the time for you all to look back and examine what you did and assess what you gained.

To readers of Zagol: You should apologize for reading materials from this website (which the Prime Minister does not appreciate). Those who are in Addis, go to the nearest KEBELE office and sign the form prepared for this purpose. When you sign this document, we will forgive you and also automatically enroll you into the upcoming training on REVOLUTIONARY DEMOCRACY. Successful completion of the training will pave the way for membership in the EPRDF (not TPLF).

Again, Zagolians apologize! Readers sign the document which partially says ".... I,[your full name, of []ethnicity], take partial responsibility for reading Zagol's venomous and seditious (read pro-democracy)postings. Today I solemnly swear not to read Zagol's until it apologizes and obtains THE SEAL OF APPROVAL from aigaforum. ..."

Gebru from Awassa:

Thank you GOD for this great news. I know our leaders had to make a decision that is good for their country and they just did. The struggle will be even big out side Kaliti untill justice prevail in my ETHIOPIA. If they were looking for their personal comfort and $$$$$, they were out a long time ago. But that was not the spirit of CUD and truley now we have not one but many MANDELAs. YOU ALL are my heros.
The above commenter by the nick name PATRIOT is a sick woyane cadre who just realized that he is done with our leaders outside Kaliti so folks just ignore him untill he hung himself and that will conclude his evil dream.
GOD BLESS ETHIOPIA. LONG LIVE CUD.

HOW CAN YOU SAY PEACE AND RECONCILIATION? There is no reconciliation whatsoever with TPLF WOYANNIE! First and foremost, they are NOT legitimate. Signing the agreement will make them a legitimate regime. They have lost the election and if there is any reconciliations they have to share power jult like they wanted to share responsibility of killing the innocent unarmed youths. Then they bring back EFFORT and lay it on the floor and have a thorough investigation of all TPLF OWNED COMPANIES. Ultimately, the money they are racking in via EFFORT is the problem. They are afraid of sharing power for fear of losing the money they have accumulated, so that is the reason as to why they are afraid of investigation. Let a commission made up of all parties do the investigation and hold all those who are accountable of corruption.

Compensate all the dead by TPLF bullets, the money should come from TPLF organization's companies. They have accumulated over 175 BILLION Birr (with very conservative estimate). You have to understand these people come from the jungle empty handed, and now they all are multi millionaires. How is that possible to be millionaire in few years time? While Ethiopia has been dependent of foreign donation these people have been racking BILLIONS! Each and every Ethiopian they tortured, maimed and killed have to be fully compensated.

Then, only then there may be a reconciliation possible. You cannot force innocent people share responsibility for crimes you committed and not share government.

I support the release of our leaders. But still Melese shall not go away with "stealing the votes".

Upto now, he has successfully turned the issue from one of "stealing votes" into "the release of our leaders". Now that our leaders are going to be released we shall, in our part, turn the issue from one of "release our leaders" into "Meles cannot stay in power because he does not have the mandate of the Ethiopian people to legitimately govern".

EPRDF by itself made it very clear that no court system in the country. It is just surprizing!!!! Though it is hard to have trust on Meles, we want our leaders be free. It does not really matter whether they signed the proposal or not as there is no rule of law in the country. Meles can jail them back in few days time if he wants. No one is gonna stop him. He has respect neither for himslef nor for the Etiopian people. Big lies are on top of EPRDF\s agenda all the time!!!
God save these great and genuine CUD leaders!!!YOu know, they are not after position, they not after money (because they have it!!) To be frank, these are the real ethiopians who would like to estabilsh freedom and free nation. They are not running for themsleves. You all know it.They can have the best life without involving with this game if they want. It is only because they want to see a free nation!!!!!!!!!!!! Meles himself knows it clearly. He really knows it very well. The problem is one and one. Meles is a bad guy, period.

Thanks must be give to Prof Ephrem Issac who worked very hard to make this thing done. Thanks to Haile Gebrselassie too. I think Haile also played some role , at least at the begnning, right EZ?
Thanks EZ for the most important good news in at least 2 years. EZ if you contact Hailu Shawel, tell him to retire with dignity. His style of politics is enough.

Hailu Shawel is one big link that brought Kinijit to what it manifested it self to be. He is also the elected leader of the party voted by millions of people. The party he belonged to, AEUP has and still have millions of members. He is among one of the top key players in merging the little known, very new Kestedemina party(under 1000 people of membership)in 2005. He might belong to the old guards of traditionalists, but by now I am convinced that he can be a compromising progressive politician. (There are different kinds of politicians, and I myself was more exposed to Dr. Berhanu Nega and Ato Andargachew Tsege. I believe these two are politicians-politicians in its sense of the end justifies the means and I think there is a generattion waiting to sing their praises, but take caution. The balance is very important or there is no Kinijit). What really makes Kinijit a coalition of the four parties is not just the merging, but also the fact that by its very union of different segements, ages, eras, professions, politicians-traditionalists and progressives coming in to the spirit of the the people's representation as Kinijit. What promoted kinijit is to find the enriched diversity of the leadership and the eight principles.

For some one who has suffered abusive prison conditions which has continuously aggravated his health, challenged with his sight due to delayed medical care while at Kality, and who is carrying a disputed "guilt verdict" of four charges, a leader whose office in Ethiopia is closed and the diaspora's leadership has been going through trial and challenges, he is brief and articulate in his correspondence and thus in his mental capability. He has resisted the agreement, seems true to his nature as reported by an eye witness journalist who was in Kality with him for almost the two years, he is a man of truth. Whatever his decision, to AGREE or NOT TO AGREE TO SIGN THE KALITY RELEASE DOCUMENT, it will be honored.

Dear Anonymous,

All that glitters is not gold. Some of us may not care for his style of politics, but fortunately it is supposed to be a democratic governance and I am sure he is very capable of mutually working with the controversial Kestedemena, Birhanu Nega and the divided Kinijit which ever one is most guilty of initiating problems.

When the 76 years old Prof. Mesfin Woldemariam writes such a thorough account of the legal process they have been through (Mastawesha Ke-Kality re: Sennay 4), age becomes blessed numbers of accumulated wisdom. The same goes for Chairman Hailu Shawel, and don't worry, even if he goes through another election, your kind of politicians will have the chair after five years. People like Prof. Mesfin and Engineer Hailu Shawel will be back by popular demand, but Kestedemena is a fascinating party I would not hesitate to be drawn to. Kinijit needs to stay as the coalition it has formed or Kestedemena might as well split and try on its on, but it will take years before they can be as earth shaking as the Kinijit. The sense of division is stagnant.

The agreement they sign will speed up the end of Ethiopia by a factor of a 100. These CUDP leaders did not fire a gun or throw rocks in the displeasure protest against AGAZI sharpshooters and security soldiers. They were incarcerated for two-years just for winning the election. The charge leveled against them is/was WRONG. They should never have signed any agreement that gives TPLF any advantages for now or for the future. They should have been released UNCONDITIONALLY! Their incarceration was illegal, and it was done by Meles to deflect attention and shift reponsibility toward them, and he succeeded in doing just that. If you read 99% of the posts on this thread is only expressing a sigh for the release of the leaders. No one is talking about the crimes MELES AND HIS TPLF ORGANIZATION COMMITTED, EVERY ON HERE IS SAYING "THEY ARE HAPPY TO HAVE THEIR LEADERS RELEASED." The real issue is Meles has gotten away scathes free, once again. This is a crime by itself and anyone associated in the agreement is a criminal, anyone endorsing such a flawed and erroneous agreement is supporting criminal act, therefore they too are CRIMINALS! That includes many of the people here pretending to be a Real-Ethiopians, which they are NOT. I bet you all here, many of the people expressing happiness of their release are associeted to TPLF party in some capacity. They are not happy in sense that the illegally incarcerated CUDP leaders are released they are happy this political drama will give TPLF a life extension. But don't worry, we the Real-Ethiopians fighting in the jungles of Ethiopia will save her at the end of the day, for those of you who are expressing a fabricated sigh should not rush it, because we are coming and we will free the country from TPLF TYRANNY!

Dear friends,
It's good to see jubiliation after two years of political stalmet. It makes me wonder why the TPLF paid political spiners running arround to confuse people. Most of us don't know much about the deal reached between the TPLF polit bureau and the CUD leaders. We're waiting to hear more from the CUD leaders. We already heared from TPLF's point of view.
The igaforum (TPLF cadres mouth piece) says it all frantically.
Ethiopiafirst (the hidden TPLF stuge) plays around to sound neutral.
God knows what happened. I believe the steps taken by CUD leaders will be for the good of the country.

Ethiopians will not pervert the judgment of their concious;which is to write off what the butcher M/p does ,and continue to do to our people. We the true childreen of Ethiopians will never agree to the proposed idea of signing a death sentence to tEthiopian opposition invented by U.S and the its running dog:that will effectively shut the glimpse of peaceful struggle in that country; we call the true culprit by their proper name:the p/m and his clique are criminals.Just to set the record the sole enemy of democracy in Ethiopians is the illigitmate non Ethiopian autoritarian and fascitic entity led ,by former gorella leade, al- Zarawe.
In short once this deal is signed,it is a death sentence against democracy, freedom of speach and and rule of law. There is only one remedy to the deep rooted problem of our people:all the true childreen of Ethiopia rise up in arms and remove this rouge, out modeed, trival entity and provide un atmospher of true democratic governance in our beloved country. We should never permit the paid cadrese in this forum and els where define for us what to accept ,and what method to follow;they came to Addis promissing to respect Ethiopian enduring values and conventions:instead we saw gross violations of our long standing national values an errosion of our history, effacement of our heros,
,the untold humailation of our people, torture, and death to our citizens.
Ther is only one solution instead of dancing with the entrapment the weyane leader set before us;our answer should be ,we have throughly known you:this is his strategy to buy time and to regroup. We need not permit this to happen;those, among us, who are surendering by loudly praising the game of the Meelese need to re think about their action. INstead, our answer should be ,we have nothing to do any more with you,we are determind to take you out:this should be our response to the butcher of addis. We will not cancel his debt;he is guilty and in need of justice, not the other way around.
The road to freedom is only through armed struggle. There is no peace while Ethiopians are being forcefully threatend to sign his admmision of guilt or mistake.True and patiotic Ethiopians ,we need to mobalize our people and send the bands in power packing. Time is on our side, better to struggle now for limited time and secure the interest of Ethiopians, than to do the same for centuries:If we dont act now ,the allternative of the future is gloom.

To Patriot,
Your statement rings some sound here and there, I hear you very well. You probably represent certain percent of the population who could strongly agree with segments of your statements, and this is one of them.

"These CUDP leaders did not fire a gun or throw rocks in the displeasure protest against AGAZI sharpshooters and security soldiers." Patriot

To me, I came to terms with their decision because it is a strong hold of wise mind and experienced body of people who have been under the circumstances they have been; in success, challenge, imprisonment, and who have reached a final unanimous decision. If they have intended to lead a peaceful struggle, yet the route was tested, but their leadership role was to attain liberity for them selves and their followers, this might be time we let them have their freedom of choice, and some of us are willing to accept their decision.

It is a complex world between the truth, the law, the power holders, diplomacy, direct vs indirect/accountable technically, the black and white and the gray that comes in between. This time accept their judgement and move on. It is kind of late any way.

38 Ethiopian opponents claim responsibility for post-poll violence

Monday 25 June 2007

June 24, 2007 (ADDIS ABABA) — 38 Ethiopian opposition activists convicted after violent protests in the wake of contested 2005 elections have admitted their "mistakes", their lawyer said Sunday.

"All the convicted 38 have agreed and signed a document accepting responsibility over the post-election violence. They have acknowledged to have made mistakes at that time," lawyer Wondawuk Ayele told AFP.

"The court had previously asked them to do so but they had refused. This is a new development and could finalize their release."

Ethiopia put more than 100 opposition figures on trial, accused of plotting a coup after disputed 2005 elections which the opposition claims were rigged.

The spokesman for Prime Minister Meles Zenawi on Sunday denied that a deal had been struck for the activists' release.

"So far there hasn't been any proposal from the government, nor has there been any mediation involving any other country," Bereket Simon said.

"I'm not aware of any developments regarding their release."

Earlier this year, the Ethiopian parliament approved a report which said 193 civilians and six policemen died during post-election violence in 2005 in one of the darkest chapters in the country's recent past.

The violence in Addis Ababa and other cities in June and November 2005 amid protests over the May 15 polls "occured due to infancy of the democratic system of the country", the report said.

The figures compiled by the inquiry were three times higher than the government's official death toll of 54 which prompted howls of protest from Western donors.

But opposition groups dismissed the report as "baseless", arguing that it failed to hold the State accountable for the bloody crackdown.
