They are released

Three minibuses carrying the thirty eight prisoners came out of Kaliti prison, sped past the busy streets of Addis and headed to the houses of the prisoners. Birtukan Mideksa and Muluneh Eyuel showed kinijit's famous "V" sign to the cheery and whistling people waiting for their release outside the gates of the prison. Some of the people were waving flags.

Their release has put to rest EPRDF's legal theatrics, even though the relentless propaganda campaign is still going on as I write this news. For our heroes, the hard task just starts. There is the task of reorganizing the party which since their imprisonment has been rudderless and leaderless. Their imprisonment has revealed who the real democracy fighters and who the opportunists are within the party. There has also been one or two lessons about strategy and tactics. There is no party time. It is work, work and work. Work for us, who count ourselves as activists for democracy, and work for our heroes.

CUD has always been the right party!

That is why we have been saying "No matter how long the night, the day will come!"

CUD and its leaders - Hailu, Mesfin, Birtukan, Birhanu, Eyouel, Hailu Araya, Gizachew and on and on - have proved to be ready to sacrifice all what they have for our freedom. We all know that as individuals they could have lived the highest level of life anywhere in Ethiopia. But, they were born to lead and they were tested with incomparable suffering to show it to all Ethiopians.

I am sorry for all myopic and pretentious politicians (Lidetu, Beyene, Chamiso, etc) that could not see the fruit of patience and endurance. We have gotten a lot to learn and to do from and following these true leaders of Ethiopia. To be rich is one thing and to be free is another (Look at Hailu S.). To be educated is one thing and to be free is another (Look at Mesfin, Birhanu, Hailus, Befekadu, in fact all of them). To be young is one thing and to be free is another (look at Birtukan and the like). So, what else do we have to compromise on our freedom? Are we better than any of these precious Ethiopians? I don't think so.

Let's get up and run with the lit torch of freedom in this country. Let's undermine savagery and repression of any kind from any source. We have seen quite enough to differentiate between the true sons of Ethiopia and the others. Not so much has remained to pave the way for enlightening Ethiopia and Ethiopians. It is simply about following the true leaders without borrowing any time or ear for the lies and cruelty of state funded terrorists (some in the skin of opposition).

I have already promised myself to struggle, to the last of my breath, enemies of Ethiopia no matter where they are (including some wings of CUD). People undermined the depth of CUD's spirit in the Ethiopian people and were seen swaying in an utter confusion making us vulnerable for the vulture EPRDF.

Let me cut it short and congratulate all Ethiopian freedom lovers. CUD has always been a true leader and will remain to be so long as we dare to sacrifice our greed and fear for the light of freedom and democracy in Ethiopia.

Girma.

Since the entire gov. machinery is/will be working against them
there will be lots and lots of hurdles on CUD and its leaders.
The most important thing is to stand by them and the Ethiopian people

History in the making
This is a glorious and unparalleled day in the history of modern day Ethiopia. Never in our history has our country ever produced people of such principle and veracity. They have endured the unforgiving conditions of the prison, the pitiful behaviours of their jailers and have paid immeasurable sacrifice. They stood the test of the tyrant. They did all these because they took the burden on their collective shoulders … the burden of the failing Ethiopia and suffering of its people. The history of Ghandi and Mandela and the world tells us that this is how great leaders are always born, through peaceful struggle, incalculable personal sacrifices and showing, in practice, that citizens should be above and beyond hateful politics. No one, particularly those in the EPRDF side, should be under any illusion. These leaders have earned their place in the hearts of the Ethiopian people and in the history of the country. Now they can lead with all the respect and admiration. And now we can follow them with confidence and the knowledge that these people have no personal agenda other than saving the nation from the catastrophe and multitude of problems. So, here, the new chapter in the struggle for real democracy and freedom in Ethiopia begins, and these true leaders will be the founding fathers of the New Ethiopia.

Dear Ethiopians, whether you support CUD or Not,
I am happy today not only because the CUD leaders are released but also they had been jailed too. I am not out of my mind or on something else. I am perfectly ok and happy and full of hope.
One thing we all have to remeber is the formation of Kinijit. As we all know KINIJIT is formed after four or ... small political oraganisations agree to merger in to one in a very short period of time. Merging any thing be it business or political entity is a very high risk and challenging task. It is even tougher when it comes to political organisations where each has its own mix of ideology, leadership's ambition, hidden interest,...etc.
Making the story shorter, the only reason for Woyane to put CUD leaders in Kality is the sudden victory of CUD in the election. The only method for the loosers to hang on power was to dismantle CUD, terrorise, torture, kill, send out of the country, jail and harass both supporters and leaders.
Yes, Woyane is the law maker, Woyane controls the security forces, and Woyane has the courts under its arm. Therefore, Woyane decided all the above to be accomplished on Kinijit leaders but without success. Instead, the last 20 months at Kality jail has solidified our leaders and brought the most successful mergence of politicians dedicated to lead the people of Ethiopia both who voted for them and for others. This Unity is tested as 'Gold' is tested with fire. This merge can not be split or inflitrated easily. Enemies of Unity & Democracy in Ethiopia were happy to keep CUD leaders in Kality to bring an end to Kinijit.
I knew these leaders are free and are fighting to free all Ethiopians from fear and poverty.
Once again we won over Woyane, Hodams and Kehadis.
V V V V for ever!!!

Ethiopian people has already revolted to see a change. No one will stop it. Why the ectasy? I am happy they are free, but this is not the time to rejoice; most of all this is not the time to thank Meles! We should be angry that he has put them in jail and imprisoned them for more than a year for contesting him in democratic election. Do not listen to closet Weyane like Ben, and stop the struggle by thanking Meles for releasing them. This is the time for reconciliation. We should continue the struggle until real democracy comes to the country.

EZ,

It is good news Opposition leaders are released. The problem is, however, how it is being reported. In the ensuing euphoria no one seems to notice another round of PR damage. Here is how Anita Powell of The Associated Press reported,

"The opposition members had been imprisoned for inciting violence in an attempt to overthrow the government following 2005 elections amid allegations that the balloting was rigged."

I thought it was only an allegation.

The irony is that even Ethiomedia.com did not catch the inaccuracy and posted the statement as is.

Ben,
You are lost in the transit before you arrived at your destinations. I have followed up all your internet pages. EthioFirst used to be my popular source of information until Kihdetu changed the course of his journey and fell on the wrong side. You are typical Hodam and Pro-Kihdetu, one who believes in sharp tongues to mis-inform the Ethiopian people. You are the product of fear society generated under 'DERG'. You are thanking Meles because he didn't sentence them to death as Kihdetu wished. Have you got the gut to ask 'Why in the first place they have to be in prison. No You don't. Because they were to take the palace by peoples vote.
I belive you may heed 'Neseha' to comeback to your conscious before late. You can not sell the interest of the majority of Ethiopians for some Firifari.

Is releasing the prisoners intended to neutralize HR2003

Meles talks today that the release is conditional. HR2003 says it unconditional.

Now, the bill must pass as soon as possible.

I am glad the CUD leaders are now out of jail. My happiness will be complete when all political prisoners are released unconditionally, immediately, and when I hear from the released leaders, what the terms of their release are. I would accept their signing under duress of the agreement to share responsibility to what happened in post-election in exchange for release, as long as they can still function as kinijit and play the leadership role.

If they have signed documents that restrict their involvement in peaceful politics, just to be out of jail, then I do not see any honor in that, as they would abandoning the struggle they gave birth to.

Today is the day we Ethiopians should celebrate. Our leaders are released. Thank you very much for those involved.

After I read about the "shimglina" from EZ post, I know this day will come soon. Here it is July 20, 2007.

Even though it is not the right time to raise the issue about the diaspora Kinijit, I want to say something about the re-election.

When Shaleqa Yosef and his co. called for re-election, I was very surprised how these people are really dieing for power. Especially the time when Dr. Taye was elected, all the focus of the media was on the release of the leaders. I could not make any sense of their action. They could wait for some time to see the results of the "shimglina".

Most Ethiopians respect Dr. Taye and we at least cried for his release. I cried when I saw him at a hotel after he was released. I am sure many will agree with me that I was expecting him to do the "shimglina" between the Shalqa group and the Andargachew group. His position should be to facilitate things between the two groups so that they can work together for our country. I was very shocked when I heard about his election and he is leaving behind the association for which he fought for years. I don't mean that there are no other intelligent people to lead the association.

I strongly believe that he can still make the difference with the association and it is a wrong decision for him to join KIC especially at the last minute. Members of KIL were nominated by the leaders at Kaliti to organize the people until they are released and here they are out from prison. I could not make any sense of the whole process by the shalega group and the two shimagles when all our eyes and ears are on the release of our leaders. Are they not concerned about their release? Why do they do the election process so fast ignoring the news about the shimglina efforts in Ethiopia for the release of our leaders? I wish they are such fast for other activities too.

God bless Ethiopia!

Anonymous said...

Now that the main leader has come back many things are going to change. One thing that worries me is:

Whats gonna happen to Kihdetu Ayalew?
Whats gonna happen to Andargachew Tsige?
Whats gonna happen to Berhane Mewa?

Anonymous said...

Yacob is Ethiopian and Ethiopia is his home!

I was reading the news about the release of our leaders on Ethiomedia.com this morning. To be honest, I have already seen everything on EZ. But, one point touched me on Ethiomedia's posting. Look at the following

"[Tegist Hailemariam (wife of Dr Yacob Hailemariam)]said she doesn’t know her husband's immediate plans, including when he might return to the United States. U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake called her, urging her to tell her husband to go to the American Embassy, get the necessary paperwork and "come home."

I will like to tell the American representative that Yacob is an Ethiopian, leader of Ethiopians and Ethiopia is his home. Don't ever take our elites and leaders. If you want - Mrs Drake -take Meles, Kihdetu, etc. We don't need them and they are good for the treacheries of western life.

Sanjaw!

Anonymous said...

Sabjaw

me too, i was surprised by that statement. Instead of asking meles to leave power to the people and grant him a shelter in US, it is pathetic to ask an Ethiopian hero to leave Ethiopia. Instead of encouraging the foundation of the released leaders to strength the democratic process they have been fighting for and scarified their lives, I found it pathetic to ask an Ethiopian hero to ask him for a cheap paper work to be signed by Yamamoto.

Anonymous said...

I would not be able to list the crimes of CUD/AFD against the Ethiopian people on this article, but the point is why on earth are they being released with out paying for their crimes? Mean while Siye and other Ethiopians are languishing in prison for years with out any justice. Is Siye worst than the Dergi riffraff like Hailu Shawel? Or Siye does not have people on higher places? Are they being released because they didn't commit any crime or they are reformed enough and they will never try again? I am afraid we will hear from them as soon as they step out of the gates of the jail house and it is not going to be their love for peace. This is what I wrote when I heard the news that they might be released, on June 30 2007. I am tempted to say I said so, Isn't it a shame when the government and people of Ethiopia show marcy to those disgusting criminals, they get more embolden and insult every one back. Shame on them and shame on the government for releasing them. They deserve to be in a rehub center not parliament chamber.

CUD Supporters in UK had a meeting in central London, yestrerday (20/07/07). The meeting was called to discuss about the future actions against the Kangaroo court decisions on CUD leadres and journalists. However the agenda was changed as a result of the release of some of our leaders. The mood of the meeting was a mix of happy for the release of the few and a sad as many innocent Ethiopians are still languishing in Meles prisons for political reasons. The meeting cheered by direct phone messages of the elected leaders of Kinijit, Birtukan and Eng. Gizachew. We were so surprised listening to each and every word filled with hope and courage. They told us that they are in a good health and better strength politicaly as well. I believe the over 20 month period at Kality was not a time wasted rather well spent to re-engineer the party and its future leaders.
Our commitment to create a free and Democraitic Ethiopia will continue!
We will not stop our fight until all political prisoners are free!

I know Meels wants to play out the game at the kality court with rest of innocent Ethiopians who have also signed the paper requesting pardon. Why does he need to play this dirty game any more is beyond my comprehension, but why not release the rest of them on bail and allow them to carry on with their life while and until the Kangaroo court finds them "guilty" and they get the pardon later from the President/ i.e. from Melees. Melese, please stop playing game with other people life and release all, I mean all poltical prisnors at once.

Hey,

Do we need KIC or KIL after this? Our leaders are free. It is obvious that we need all the KINIJIT support groups.

Words in picture...Courtesy of ethiomedia.com

It seems a glimpse into a sampling of homes into that famous crowd of 2005, all 15,000 and more.

Engineer Hailu Shawel graced by his hosting wife, breaking Ethiopian bread (Tshadik) to be shared among family, friends and well wishers..

Dr. Berhanu’s radiant smile seems to dawn into a return to freedom.. It seems he has lost weight.

The crowd welcoming them with the classic Ethiopian flag is memorable.

Today, Prof. Mesfin Woldemariam looks cool and younger and gives you an impression that he sends some subtle image he is a grand father, from his terquiz blue stripe knit hat.

Life goes on! All 38 of you, welcome back to the world with out walls.

" Bygone is bygone". Now is time to wake up from a dream and face the real EPRDF. EPRDF is evil in many respects but CUD is not saint if not evil too. Examples that CUD is not saint includes Lidetu. We always have to be aware peoples like Lidetu who switch sides at a trying times. Now the CUD is well tested with fire, it must come as true opossition.

THIS IS THE MOMENT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE ON WHILE THE HYPE IS STILL FRESH THE CUDP LEADERSHIP SHOULD ENCOURAGE ALL TO GO OVERTHROW THE MENACE TO SOCIETY, TPLF!

ITS TIME TO FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE. IT IS THE SAME AS FIGHTING WILDFIRE WITH INTENTIONAL AND STRATEGIC FIRE SO THE WILDFIRE WILL EAT ITSELF AND DIE.

I am also disturbed with amount praise going to the direction of to the evil from shemageleowch, while at the same time closing their eyes on the manipulation and the dirty trick of the Mafia's media to humiliate time tested heroes of Ethiopia. I am not worried about the image of my Heroes, but about them (the mediators). I am afraid that they won't be tricked to become part and parcel of the extension for the regime’s repression machine. A true reconciliation (erque) doesn't materialize with out the real truth coming out open. I would have also advised the mediators to demand that all political prisoners should be given a blanket amnesty. If the amnesty board can not secure that with out the formal conclusion of the trial, then force the desecrated Judge Ali to give them bail (I am sure Melese can give him a call for that). I do not know how can they live with the fact these innocent people are spending one more day in qailty prison, while everybody know they fate has already been decided by the outcome the negotiating which resulted the outcome we now know. Why do they need to play the fake and farce jurisprudence game with the fate of innocent people? I think the shenagelowch and the whole society is sick of Stockholm syndrome. I guess that what happens to everybody when you get used and start to appreciate a hostage situation by the mafia gang who takes away your freedom at will and give you back at will. Please demand for the immediate releases of all who are indicted by the same charge and eventually all political prisoners.

I wonder why people are shying from the idea of ARMED STRUGGLE. It seemed that there is no other way of getting rid of the present system another way. Peaceful struggle will not get us anywhere. Peaceful struggle is only between two likewise peaceful groups. As the brute himself put it the other week, there can be no mediation or discussion between two groups that don't have "EQUAL STANDINGS". His definition of "EQUAL STANDING" I persume, is the AK 47. So wake up brothers??? What does it take for us to say enough is enough... We have been rediculed, imprisoned, locked up in torture chambers, and murdered for the last 16 years. I think it is time to show them that we are in "EQUAL STANDINGS" WITH THEM ONCE AND FOR ALL.

Armed Struggle?
That is the last choise. I don't think that we fought enogh peaceful struggle. I am 40 and I can remember a struggle of max. 18 months especially in the diaspora. We need a propaganda machines like radio to reach our fellow ethiopians at home. Using it in different ethioian languages means taking the base of TPLF from every corner of our country. Just like the Derg, TPLF will begin to smelt. At this time thinking about armed struggle is not reasonable and tactically wrong at all. When you want to fight, you have to know your strength and the weaknesses of your enemy. Armed struggle at this time is a strength of TPLF and a weakness of the opposition. Peaceful struggle means a strength of the opposition and a weakness of TPLF. So let us do what we can do best now.

Bad for the poor people and big celebration for Woyanne!
EZ please tell us about this development.

What next? I think the leaders of CUDP should come to America, the UK, and continental Europe for two purposes: 1/ to say thank you to the Ethiopian Diaspora and foreign governments, congressmen as well as parliamentarians that were in the forefront for the struggle for their release, and 2/ to forge an alliance or a good relationship with the foreign offices or state departments of America, the UK, and countries in continental Europe. One weakness of CUDP was that it did not do a good political work among the Woyane army. The other weakness was that it did not establish a good alliance or working relationship with America, the UK, and countries in continental Europe. I think, now it is the time to do the latter.

It seems that KIC is not going to handover the leadership to the released leaders. I could not understand the agenda of all the meetings and tour they are conducting in different towns these days. They are not celebrating about the release; rather they are trying to convince the public that they are the true leaders delegated by the Kaliti leaders. It doesn't matter whether this is true or not. There is no need to do this since the leaders are released and they need to handover every thing. I am happy about KIL since they are ready to handover the leadership to the released leaders. KIL is also celebrating their release. Shame on you members of KIC!!!!!!!

First the Economist, then the Independent in Europe, and now the wave has crossed the Atlantic and has hit the eastern coast. What am I talking about? I am talking about the implicit suggestion being forwarded by the major Newspapers of the liberal and the Conservative wing of the ruling elite in the western World regarding the tplf regime.

Read the Wall Street Journal. It has put the issue in its editorial page. The New York times appears to pick the day with most readership to publish exposes about Meles so that more people will get to know the dictatorial regime.
And now, the Washington Post is calling for a regime change in Ethiopia. Read,"What to do with the Problematic ally" ie Meles Zenawi.
More and more his fate appears to be the same as that of dictators of the past...Noriega, Shah of Iran, Haiti's Papa Doc...etc.

Yineghal Le Ithyopia,

Thank you for your good observation.

Medias that used to endorse Melese have now cancelled their endorsement of Meles. For instance, the most influential center-left newspapers and magazines in the world – The Economist and The Guardian – have portrayed Melese as one of the worst dictators in Afirca. Melese has not only lost his support from the center-left newspapers and magazines, which are normally supposed to support him due to his center-left ideology, but also from the most influential center-right newspapers and magazines like The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and The New York Times. The time spent by the CUDP leaders is, thus, not spent for “nothing” – it has changed the image of Melese all over the world.

Now we have to work on the BBC and the Reuters. I think Reuters has some kind of PR agreement with Melese, like the Washington DC law firm DLA Piper. As far as my knowledge is concerned, these are the only influential media outlets that are still supporting Melese. Therefore, we should work very hard to let these media outlets know about the real Melese.

Anon 1:29.
You are day dreaming. Just what kinjit expects is support from what kinjit ethiopia decides. KIL and KIC are dissolved . KIL accepted officially and KIC is still saying we will continue. Of all I dont expect Dr Taye to be part of this. Say something Doc or resign gracefully.

Anonymous said...

Thank you very much for the six members of KIL. You are the true sons of Ethiopia and you are respected by Ethiopians and the leaders of CUD at home. You showed civility to handover your responsibility to the leaders at home. Thank you once again.

I still appreciate the individual contribution of KIC memebers for the struggle to democracy.

However, they should be ready to show some civility to handover their responsibility rather than saying "we are still mandated to organize other events other than political leadership". You are asked by the released leaders to work hard in the support groups only. Please, respond to the yesterday's letter from CUD chairman at home. Even though KIC is a one month organization, your contribution as individuals, in the support groups and as memebrs of KIL in the past is appreciated and we Ethiopians are expecting to hear something from you.

I TOLD YOU SO!!!

EPHRAIM ISAAC IS TPLF INSIDER, HIS MISSION IS TO DISSOLVE ETHIOPIAN STRUGGLE IN FAVOR OF TPLF. CUDP LEADERS THINK THEY HAVE SIGNED UP FOR AGREEMENT SHOWN ON TV the truth is THE DOCUMENT CUDP LEADERS SIGNED FOR HAS DAMAGE THAN THEY BARGAINED FOR.

LANTOS DIRECTED NOT TO MARK UP H.R. 2003!

- EPHREM ISAAC LOBBIES HARD AGAINST H.R. 2003

The Coalition for HR 2003 has learned that Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Tom Lantos was directed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (San Francisco) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Maryland) not to mark-up H.R. 2003 on July 31, 2007. The reasons for the directive are not clear.

Preliminary investigations suggest that neither Chairman Lantos nor Chairman Payne were consulted prior to issuance of the directive. The Coalition is informed and believes that over the past few days, Zenawi's lobbyists from DLA Piper, State Department officials and others were engaged in intense lobbying of Pelosi and Hoyer. Recent reports in national newspapers and magazines in the United States have documented the involvement of DLA Piper lobbyists to defeat H.R. 2003. http://harpers.org/archive/2007/07/hbc-90000631

The Coalition has further learned that Ephrem Isaac, who has recently been masquerading as a "shimagle," has been engaged in intense lobbying efforts against H.R. 2003 in Congress. He was observed visiting various congressional offices today chaperoned and accompanied by Congressman Gary Ackerman of New York. The Coalition is investigating information that Isaac is mobilizing powerful Jewish leaders and groups in the United States against H.R. 2003.

The Coalition respectfully notifies Ethiopian Americans in California and Maryland, particularly in the congressional districts of Pelosi and Hoyer, to prepare for vigorous and intense advocacy in the coming days.

The Coalition will provide further statement on these developments shortly. The Coalition will prepare an advocacy action plan in the near future.

What about the other political prisoners? Thre are thousands of them. There were thousands of them when KINIJIT decided to challenge TPLF at the ballot box. KINIJIT won that election 05 and the political prisoners would've been free the day KINIJIT took power. Berhanu wrote about his schock when he found some political prisoners in their 90s in his famous book. How much horsepower does this CUD got? Both in Ethiopia and here in Aussland where I have been, KINIJIT have great support, if not all the support of all the people. Even those who have separatist agendas don't criticize KINIJIT no more because they know the great majority of Ethiopians support KINIJIT.

My father was EPRP fighter and now he is not even EPRP member. EPRP had the majority of Ethiopians supporting it regarless of ethnic origin thirty years ago. At least the youth of Ethiopia was totally for EPRP all over Ethiopia at that time.

Now both adults and the young support KINIJIT regardless of ethnic origin except in Tigray. Freedom should be fought for and not just democracy which can be mostly relative. The spirit leads and Hailu Shawel is just the body and they all have already made history which will be remembered for centuries to come and they all are our heroes. Let's make that sink and while we do that let's not forget the tens of hundreds of our brothers and sisters who are languishing in the gruesome TPLF torture chambers all over Ethiopia for our freedom and those who 'disappeared' whichever political group they are accused of belonging as we read this. TPLF endehone gedilo siyabeqa afalgugn yilal...and that TPLF has done so many times that we stopped reading the names of 'the disappeared' like ten years ago on HRCO's report and Amnesty International and Human Right watch and SOECP and half a dozen others.

Please, Please Becareful precious Ethio Zagol, fascists have a tendency to hunt and kill while innocents are distracted

Let's not be closet Woyane like Ben of Ethiopia first website please. It is too early to praise the Tyrant Meles Zenawi.
