EPRDF's new PR strategy

Kinijit's recent problems have  highlighted EPRDF's new public relations strategy. The state media which usually pounces on problems within opposition groups has stayed silent this time; leaving that task to the pro-EPRDF private newspapers such as Amare Aregawi's  The ReporterThe Reporter had several stories and articles about Kinijit's alleged division. The newspaper which had vociferously criticized Kinijit's chairman Hailu Shawel after the election has now tacitly supported him with the chairman's supporters in Kinijit  like Bedru Adem, Nigist Gebrehiwot and Mesobewerk Kitaw all getting front page treatment.

Sources at the paper say that the owner and editor-in-chief of The Reporter, Ato Amare Aregawi, has told two of his journalists to dig stories that show the true extent of the split within Kinijit. The stories were presented with a bit of spin in Hailu Shawel's favour by the paper's deputy editor-in-chief, Eshete Assefa, who has long-standing friendship with Mesobewek Kitaw. Amare hasn't so far objected to the way the stories are put out as his sole focus is to play out the division in public and destroy the party. "He doesn't care an iota as to the individual leaders and their positions. His objective is the destruction of Kinijit," a journalist working at the paper tells EZ Post.

Another pro-EPRDF newspaper, Ethio-Channel, owned by the advertiser Samson Mamo, has also given a lot of attention to the recent problems. Ethio-Channel had last saturday a two-pages inteview with Bedru Adem, the man who since Kaliti days has played a huge role in aggravating the personal differences between Hailu Shawel and Brehanu Nega. In his court defense, Bedru had claimed that he couldn't bear collective responsibility with the other Kinijit leaders for the criminal charges that the public prosecutor instituted against him as he had resigned from Kinijit before the November protest. But that hasn't stopped him from attacking Brehanu Nega and Birtukan Mideksa stating that he is still a member of the Kinijit council.  His pictures and quotes now admonish the pages of pro-EPRDF newspapers in Addis Ababa.

EPRDF, meanwhile, has tried to appear as if it were above the fray. The state media's new slogan is "War on Poverty", with most attention given to Ethiopia's economic development. Kinijit's problem hasn't received a single minute so far except on Mimi Sinhatu's talkshow. Mimi's core audience are EPRDF members and supporters.

Sources who are close to government officials say that the government has understood that its public hostility towards Kinijit has backfired, and any  playing out of Kinijit's problems on the state media would be interpreted by a lot of Ethiopians as EPRDF's attempt to destroy the party. "They want the public to know about the problems, but not through the government media. Instead, they are using Ethio-Channel and The Reporter," says one of the sources.

Ez,
Don't you admire EPRDF ? That is what counts in politics. Know what the people want and react based on that knowledge. I am telling you, the more I see the problems we have, the more I get frustrated. We have no independent media and that is not just because of the government. We as a society are not democratic. Actually the EPRDF led government is more democratic than the oppositions right now. They don't even tolerate decenting views amongest the opposition. Look at the currenct infighting that is taking place in the US. All 'independent' media are taking sides and attacking each other. So how are we going to bring democracy in our country?

EZ - You are doing your best , as usual, exposing "hode aderoch" who are playing the role of "azagn kibe anguach" for dire situation kinijit is in now. Personally, Amare, samson and mimi trio surprise me the least that they are creating a huge news item out of the fiasco. They are sworn enemies of the popular struggle as they think that champions of democracy would allow free press and their trash products would not cope with dynamic journalism which we were unfortunate to enjoy thanks to woyanes barbaric press law.

As to the trio - adem, kitaw and nigist, let them enjoy the attention now while they can as incompetence would give them the final farewell soon. I heard them crying foul when they were trying to justify the problem within by calling names and labeling those most competent democratic leaders

We here in Europe and America, we are enjoying the presence of those leaders. We are well convinced that individually or as a group, they are most competent, charismatic and visionary leaders who have the courage, intellectual power and love of the entire ethiopian population. No one other than this group would guarantee us the victory over the woyane regime

Thank you EZ and take car

I am not surprised about Samson Mamo's News paper. One time he had tried to commit character assassination on respectiful old man Professer Mesfin Woldemariam lablelling him as a killer of the famous writer Baalu Girma on morning Ethiopian Radio program.Mimi Sibihatu has a big security company with support of Bereket Simon. So she must be the voice of the government. She is aslo promised to get the famous recrational center(Bihere Tsige) which was owned by her late father and later confisicated by derg.Amare Aregawi is well known and no need .Close friends told me that he was so upset by Birihanu's book because he was criticized for his double standard .Bedru Adam is thinking that the best gift for the EPRDF for the Millenium is to balme and intimidate Birihanu so that he wiil develop confidence on to EPRDF.

EZ,

I don't understand why you are complaining that pro-EPRDF papers are now reporting on the infighting within Kinjit.

Ethio-Zagol and Ethiopian Review and the VOA Amharic are the ones which worked hard to deepen the division
between the Hailu Shawel group and the Berhanu Nega group -- siding with Berhanu's group.

So, I don't understand why you are now complaining since you are not a neutral spectator or an objective journalist.

If Kinijit falls, it is mostly thanks to you guys. That is a big win for EPRDF and it didn't have to lift a finger to destroy the opposition party.

You are doing a beautiful job wrecking Kinijit.

Dear Editor,

You stated in your blog, 'Ato Amare Aregawi, has told two of his journalists to dig stories that show the true extent of the split within Kinijit.'

What is a problem with that? Should not you want to know? Well, I do and I suspect millions others would want to know too. Do you really see how your partiality ruins your analysis?

I don't alos think it is Ato Amare who is fanning the destruction of Kinjit. Kinjit is in the process of dying because of a terminal illness called power-greed. And, it is you and Ethiopian Review and the VOA Amharic are the ones who are championing the division for you and your buddies have an axe to grind.

How can you blame Amare Aregawi , when you are doing exactly what he is doing, in your case in favour of Birhanu NEGA. I would have responded to you in kind , but for the sake of civility, greater cause , the nation and its unfortunate people , i will pass it. I must , however admit , you are a partisan empty adulator in the service of political expediency and power grab , rather than working towards solving the age old problems of gross injustice , treachery , bribery , murder, torture and military/police terror incured up the people of Ethiopia by the Ethinocentric descendants of Shumbashs and Musollini Admirers.

The more you are closer to a person, the more he is empty , or so says the chineese proverb.

My stomach cringes in extreme sadness by the selfish propagandists who fuel the disagreement instead of playing the role of honet brokership.

How sad , how cheap can we get???

My African People,

Kinijit is a party that has come through many adversities. An open and democratic parties are allowed to have differences among members at times. As we all know there are different views among Kinijit leaders. These kind of differences can be solved by different means. According to the leaders, the voting that took place in Addis Abeba has put Eng. Hailu Shawel's views in the minority. Case closed. Until he convinces the rest and wins the majority, he has no reason to hold grudges. Until he feels better, the rest will travel around the United States to thank and strengthen their party.

As far as the woyanne news papers published in Addis Abeba, I understand what they are trying to do however, I would not give them any weight at this time. Addis Fortune, Reporter, Eftin, Sendeq and Ethio-Chanel are well known papers who have lost their credibility among the readers.

The story is our of the bottle. No one is going to be fooled by these woyane support groups disguised as free press in Ethiopia.

It doesn't take a genius to know that Kinjit is dead now! EPRDF battle is against Poverty and Ignorance not against people who are too egotistical and childish at the same time. Again.. pity!

These news papers don't sell that much. People don't read these papers as we all think in United States or Europe. I believe the circulation is no more that 5000 per edition and not all sell.

Amare Aregawi is a well known EPRDF supporter. The reporter owner recently bought a 6 million dollar printing press from Dubai. It should arrive in Addis Abeba in the next couple of months.

I thought you were for freedom of speech? Hmmmm... I guess it is ok for you to gossip about EPRDF's alleged division on the question of releasing CUDP leaders from jail, but it is a no-no for the independent media to print any thing negative about CUDP.

You are very funny.

Opponents received in Washington DC-Strategy to sideline the hard wing

Indian Ocean Newsletter N° 1222 25/09/2007

The American government has invited Ethiopian opponents to Washington for talks with opposition leaders recently freed from prison. The latter group, led by Ms Birtukan Mideksa (ION 1222), came to the USA on its own steam two weeks ago. All were received at the State Department on 21 September by American officials working on the Africa and Ethiopia desks.

This meeting gathered Beyene Petros, Merera Gudina, the former President Negaso Gidada, Ayele Chemiso (an MP from the legal arm of the CUDP), Lidetu Ayalew, Berhanu Nega, Birtukan Mideksa and Hailu Araya. Their discussions with the American officials concerned how the Ethiopian opposition could adopt a joint political platform so that it could take part in the next elections in Ethiopia with the approval of the Addis Ababa government. They also discussed a strategy to sideline the hard wing of the opposition, consisting of Hailu Shawel and the EPRP, which wants nothing to do with the current TPLF regime in Ethiopia.

The talks are expected to continue with further meetings with the presence of Bulcha Demeksa, currently passing through Washington. The American Deputy Secretary of State for African Affairs, Jendayi Frazer is expected to meet these Ethiopian opponents this week.

This American mediation is consistent with the strategy devised by the US Ambassador to Addis Ababa Donald Yamamoto, intending to isolate Amhara radicals such as Hailu Shawel and the anti-EPRDF forces like the EPRP.

How could a group that has no party discipline wish to lead a complex society like Ethiopia. I do not see that they have the wisdom and the temperament to be a leader. Just because they are good at "Yashatir poletika" does not make them good leaders. It has been a drama akin to Disney land. "Poletika mehonu New!"?
Can't even reconcile internal contradiction among compatriots, but want to be entrusted with the future of Ethiopa. what a minions!

A recent speech in the European Parliament by Dr. Yacob Hailemariam got me thinking about the state of opposition politics in Ethiopia. The recently freed opposition leaders have begun their carefully-orchestrated publicity tour in Europe and the United States. So far they have paraded themselves before hundreds of clueless supporters as the heroes of the democratic struggle in Ethiopia. Nothing could be further from the truth: these opposition leaders were freed from prison not because of the direct and indirect external pressure exerted on the Ethiopian government; they were freed because of the realization on the part of the Ethiopian government that doing so would accelerate the rate of democratization in Ethiopia by demonstrating the government’s commitment to the process and the lack of any meaningful space for political vendetta against one’s political opponents. Moreover, political magnanimity and the opportunity for national reconciliation following a bitterly contested election are needed to create the necessary political space for further democratic change. It is in that spirit that all of the freed opposition leaders signed a letter taking responsibility for the violence that took place in the aftermath of the 2005 election.

In his speech before the European Parliament, Dr. Yacob Hailemariam made a series of provocative, factually wrong and downright embarrassing statements. And this is what he had to say about the role of the European election observers, particularly its head, Anna Gomez: “…the European Observer Team led by Mrs. Anna Gomez has won the respects of the Ethiopian people for the principled stand it took in regard to the 2004 elections and the demand for unconditional release of prisoners of conscience in Ethiopia.” He goes on to say, “this is largely due to the heroic struggle put up by Mrs. Anna Gomez without fear or favor.”

I am honestly unsure about where to begin with regard to the bootlicking of Dr. Yacob. Dr. Yacob was not freed by European Union Special Forces from an Ethiopian prison. Nor was he freed by the “heroic struggle” of Anna Gomez for the latter is nothing but an intellectually bankrupt, condescending and third-rate EU politician. The esteemed doctor should realize he was freed because of the tireless efforts that Ethiopian elders and representatives of the Ethiopian government put into the negotiations for his release in the hope that he and his partners would channel their newly found freedom into a constructive presence in the democratization process that is under way in Ethiopia. But I seriously doubt that the likes of doctor Yacob and his partners in the so-called opposition were interested in democracy in the first place. It seems to me that democracy for these people is to kick the current government out of power and satisfy their hunger for power, which they lost years ago with the demise of Mengistu Hailemariam. To these individuals, democracy is to win elections at whatever cost and assume the coveted powers of the prime minister and rule Ethiopia in whatever ways they like. The painful process of democratization that involves building the necessary institutions is a minor inconvenience so long as they could convince the likes of Anna Gomez that they are the true democrats.

What is sad is that most politicians and pundits in Europe and North America tend to have soft spot for who ever label themselves opposition to any government. Anyone that opposes any government is automatically granted some form of legitimacy. Otherwise, serious-minded people would have asked fundamental questions about the May 2005 elections: why did CUD abandon the will of the people that voted for it by boycotting Parliament and the administration of Addis? If the Ethiopian government was so dictatorial and hell-bent on rigging the election, why were the election so competitive and why did the government let CUD win all the regional seats in Addis? Of course, the answers to these questions do not neatly fit into the narrative that CUD and its enables in the Diaspora have crafted mainly for external consumption. It is virtually impossible to have a normal conversation about the state of democratization in Ethiopia without some rabid opposition supporter pointing out the blunders of the current government without necessarily pointing out an alternative agenda espoused by the opposition. Granted, even the Ethiopian government has acknowledged some irregularities during the election but they were not sufficient to invalidate an otherwise free and fair election. Even the most mature liberal democracies experience irregularities during national elections.

Dr. Yacob even goes as far as suggesting that Mrs. Gomez is so popular in Ethiopia that she could actually win an election for a national office, such as the presidency or the premiership. This is exactly the kind of rhetoric that is embarrassing and infuriating for any serious-minded Ethiopian. Has the doctor taken any opinion polls about the popularity of Mrs. Gomez in Ethiopia? Or is it just another example of an arrogant intellectual who do not reside in Addis Ababa dismissing the views of millions of Ethiopians? It is so evident that for CUD and its supporters, what constitutes Ethiopia are not it’s the more than 75 million people but rather a small number of elites that are part and parcel of CUD’S noise-making machinery. Otherwise, how could a reasonably educated person such as the esteemed doctor make such a profoundly sweeping statement? I, for one, would not even want Mrs. Gomez in an Ethiopian prison let alone running my country. But again, for the likes of Dr. Yacob, pandering to European politicians and attending cocktail parties seem to have more weight than engaging in the meaningful but arduous task of contributing to a genuine democratic Ethiopia.

The paradox of these tragic figures in Ethiopian politics is that they want democracy but do not want to do the things necessary for democracy to materialize. They would rather do all the posturing and reap all the benefits that come with it, such as a speech before the European Parliament. Let’s face it, the EU or any other outside body cannot bring about democratic change Ethiopia; democratic change can only come as a result of a shared commitment by the Ethiopian people. Since democratization is by its very nature very messy and time-consuming, European politicians do the next best alternative: embrace who ever comes claiming to be the savior of Ethiopia. Of course, the implicit premise behind all the pressure on Ethiopia is that just like all the other poor Third World countries, Ethiopia is allergic to democracy and without help from the ‘civilized’ Europe, it can never achieve democratic governance.

To most opposition leaders, who seem to have a startlingly blind following in the Diaspora, all you need to do to bring about democratization in Ethiopia is to hold some street protest in front of the World Bank and IMF and the occasional speech in the European Parliament. Then democracy would spring up. Never mind that good governance can only come from within and not through imposition from without. As for supporters of the opposition abroad, it is hard to know if they simply are zombies, who are blindly led by their masters, or they are interested in the well-being of Ethiopia but do not know how to provide any other meaningful contribution to the process of democratization. It is virtually impossible to understand the many beliefs the opposition and its supporters hold that are in contradiction with each other: the Ethiopian government is so repressive yet allows the same opposition leaders to say whatever they want to foreign media outlets from within Ethiopia; the Ethiopian government is so corrupt yet it channels many resources in building critical infrastructure such roads, hospitals, clinics and schools, and Ethiopia is so sealed off from the outside world and that its people are in a perpetual state of fear, yet opposition supporters, somehow, seem to have so much information about the political dynamics in Ethiopia. At times, it almost seems like one is reading about North Korea and not a country that has had three elections in a span of 15 years.

CUD and it supporters have to realize that empty rhetoric and posturing cannot propel the process of democratization in Ethiopia forward. If they are genuinely interested in accelerating the democratic process, they had better stop their whining and engage in a constructive dialogue. Based on how they have been behaving in the North America and Europe since their release from prison, however, I would not be surprised if their next stop is Asmara to pay tribute to the dictator. Of course, if Dr. Yacob and others want to thank those who seemed hell-bent on punishing Ethiopia for conducting a highly competitive, and free and fair election, then they would have to necessarily pay homage to the Eritrean propaganda machine. Needless to say, that would be the ultimate tragedy

But I am not sure EZ is working under the directives of CUD and that is the same with reporter. The bottom line is, there is no free press in ethiopia not only because the government baned it it is also because we can't think free of bi-partisian view.

Here is a question as an answer to your question

"If the Ethiopian government was so dictatorial and hell-bent on rigging the election, why were the election so competitive and why did the government let CUD win all the regional seats in Addis? "

Why were local observers denied permission until Friday afternoon (May 13, 2007)? This effectively meant that there were no independent observers in most rural polling stations. IF THERE WERE INDEPENDENT OBSERVERS OUTSIDE ADDIS ABABA, EPRDF WOULD HAVE NO CHANCE OF 'WINNING' THE RURAL DISTRICTS.

And 1 more point: you don't talk about democratization and kill 100s of civilians on the streets or put 10,000s in concentration camps. WAKE UP!

Look in the mirror buddy! It starts from you, and then Ethiomedia, the notorious ER, Addis Voice, EMF etc on the one hand----Ethiolion, Debeteraw, Mahder,Andenet and Kinijit.org etc on the other hand are inflaming the conflict by taking sides.

For example at ER, Ethiomedia, EMF and Addis Voice you will never see an article that is against or critcize the BB group. Instead they all attack the other group.

The same thing at Ethiolion, Mahder, Kinijit.org and Andenet. You will never see any article or comment against HS but instead they all attack the BB group.

All the above mentioned media outlets are outside the country and free press.

If these so called free press journalists and media out lets can not excerisce independence and tolerance of opposing ideas - then how do you expect the evil EPDRF to tolerate the free press.

It is understandable that different media outlet can support or side with certain ideology or thoughts. In the United States that can work because there is free press. On the other hand it will not work in Ethiopia. If only one side is allowed to have a say and the other point of views are denied, it is called propaganda. I read the Washington Post and Washington Times for a liberal and conservative point of views in America. After Reading the Reporter in Addis Abeba , what other choices are there for people to read in Ethiopia? None.
