It is people-powered politics

The Kinijit delegations in North America and Europe are doing an impeccable job. They have had no breaks, running from one city to another, meeting Ethiopians, answering questions, raising funds, testifying and attending at the US congress hearings, and trying to solve their internal problems. They are doing that against all the odds and meddlings from different interest groups.
I want them to do the same here when they come back. I want them to go to Tepi, Gimbi, Arba Minch, Butajira, Ankober, Adi Grat...to all regions in Ethiopia South, North, West, East and talk to Ethiopians, listen to our problems, eat and pray with us. I know public gatherings are prohibited in Ethiopia  de facto. I know there are pending issues of legalization. I know EPRDF officials who are angry with the perceived role of Kinijit leaders in the passing of HR 2003 may make things even harder for them. But we have chosen a value-based political strategy with which needs creativity, patience, resolve and perseverance. If gatherings continue to be prohibited, Kinijit leaders can go door to door, facing harassment from local officials and cadres. They can go to social gatherings, churches, mosques and be with the people. This isn't an election time.  They don't need to give massive speeches. They just need to be with Ethiopians and listen to what they say. kinijit is a political organization that has promised to bring about democracy from the bottom-up. Its strength is its grass roots support. As we have seen in the cities in Europe and America, those who are ready to give away their hard-earned dollars, to live the promises of democracy, freedom and humanism and to deeply care about the party are people who aren't even party members. The same is true here.  We are longing to see you here again Hailu Shawel et al!

I agree EZ! A heavenly job from you man.

EZ;
your suggestion is timely and needs an urgent consideration. I would say that we have to first to first fight hard to legalize the party. Any move prior may make things even harder. Do not you think so?

My friend, you seem to be living in a cuckoo land. Having witnessed what happened to multitudes of nameless Ethiopians--I know the leaders are released after 20 months of politically motivated imprisonment--it will be irresponsible to advocate for the participation of the people in such futile exercise called 'legal & peaceful' as you would like to name it. Where were your elite kinijit members of leaders while the poors of merkato of arat kilo were grappling with bare hands against the well armed brutal Agazi contingent? An error once is human. In fact, I can go to the extent of believing that the hope invested in the peaceful transformation of the country is immense enough to absolve whoever was doggedly pushing that line which ultimately culminated in the deaths of hundreds and incarceration & torture of tens of thousands. But, if you come back again with the same lythany, you will put the seriousness of the Kinijit movement in serious question.

Dear anonymous 3:47 AM,
So what is your suggestion? are you expecting Ethiopians to be "yebeyee temelkache" to put it generously? Ethiopians are being systematically disfranchise and weaken while few scum bags are turning millionaires over few years time. What lucrative business is there in Ethiopia to create such unseemingly awash of millionaires? it is not a progress, rather a disease called corruption. So Ethiopians do not have other option but to oppose tyranny and claim their rights. Ethiopians are living a life as if they are under colonial rule - woyaneas do not feel like Ethiopians while they expect obedience from Ethiopians. what does not make it colonial-sort of rule then? color of the ruling thugs? they think they have golden color in metaphoric sense. so why don't they go where ever else and leave us alone if they have enough gold as they claim?

we do struggle to bring these shameless bigots to accountability to all crimes they committed so far until to-date. they have no intention to back down from their fool-hardy ways of suppressing dissent. may be you are one of their foot solder, who knows?

EZ- You made a good point, the Kinijit leaders should use every venue possible, in order to meet the masses with the greatest number possible. Let's say they make their visit to "town A" coincide with the town's market days, where many people are likely to aggregate in one place and make the visit on town B coincide with a big holiday.... such as Timket or that local area's special occasion, such as Kulibi Gebrel... and so on. I hope this government will start acting as a grown up and let these people move about their business. Otherwise, EPRDF will only be further tightening its own leash.

why would anyone interested to read a weyane mouth piece?

It is like reading walta and ena to find out what is going on inside Kinijit. does that make any sense to you?

Every countermove and preparation must be done as the regime is preparing to make kinijit leaders life hell when they go back. They may even go to the extent of jailing them again. To expect the regime to act as normal statpersons is being foolish. We have to prepare for the worest.

Dear EZ

Could you please investigate into the veracity of the following story from Ethiopia?

A large group of Ethiopian Orthodox faithful on an annual pilgrimage to Mesekrem 21st Gishen Mariam celebrations were attacked by militant Muslims at the approaches to the small town of Kamisse, northern Shoa. Several pilgrims were reportedly injured and buses they chartered were smashed. Eyewitness and informal sources said that the local Church leaders used the pulpit to inform believers of more threats from Muslims.

Once a paragon of religious tolerance, Wollo seems to descend into a hotbed of bigotry. The writing has been on the wall for some time now as a recent report on the New York Times forewarned of the dangerous consequences of the radicalisation Wollo Muslims. With the bankruptcy of their ethnic divide and rule, the ethnocrats in Addis are now igniting fresh religious animosities or stoking smouldering ones.

I think the article published on the Ethiopian Reporter is a good analysis! It gives a hint on so many questions that one raises concerning the current Kinijit problem! In fact, it supports DR. Brihanu's Group and strategy from political point of view!!

Read the one supra and guess who wrote it. It is a Woyane Agent. Woyane is a “a unique phenomenon in which a ruling elite sets out to rule a country whose existence it doubts and whose history it despises.....The power elite does not even recognise the necessity of maintaining the territorial integrity of the very country it rules.”

CUD IS NOT WOYANE OR A LOYAL OPPOSITION . READ ITS MANIFESTO. IT IS NOT FROM DEDEBIT.

Anonymous said...

EZ,
You must be kidding. Neither Gimbi nor Tepi is Washington DC. No, what you are talking is not practical at this stage. For sure the plan works had there no any constraints for the movement of the CUD leaders, and their capacity to reassemble gatherings and lead discussions. Fist of all, they have been denied their party name because Meles dreams to remove the name kinijit from the Ethiopian politics, then hopes to disintegrate the party once and for all. Unfortunately, the name kinijit doesn't seem to be removed from the Ethiopian politics because it has assimilated with minds and hearts of many millions of ethiopians regardless of their age.

In my view, what the kinijit leaders have to do right now is to get more internal and external support to get back their party name since their was no wrong to use their own party name. They have to make sure that the regime has to be committed to let them lead meetings. I think, since the regime came a little inch forward, regardless of the reason, their is a hope that things will go forward. In addition, if the HR bill becomes law, that will help both to benefit for building each one's political party and activity and come in front of the people with their political option so that the people will decide what is good for them.

So, meles still needs some more pressure before the opposition leaders go to Gambela or Tepi.

I share your opinion! In fact the article may be written by Meles's political advisor!!!

the article speaks about
- Why rainbow formed a coalition with AEUP and UDEP-Medhin (the hidden agenda!)
- Why they wanted to make the G-5
- Why they rush to America
- Why Andargachew group created different support groups
- Why Eng. Gizachew talked about young leaders in the DC meeting
- Why Dr. Hailu involved in the G-5
- What could be the possible response of the general public
- Etc

It makes a parallel analysis with the 2001 TPLF internal problem and forced depart of Siye group!

The writer argues that BBB’s political manoeuvre is the right to do from political point of view!!

According to the writer BB-group follows Meles’s strategy (during the 2001 TPLF internal problem) while Eng. Hailu follows that of Siye’s group… A very detail and excellent analysis!!!

First thing is first! I think Hailu and Berhanu need to mend their differences before they start their crusade. I think if this difference is not solved as soon as possible the rift will get so deep it will be hard to cross it over. The virus that is created in North America could spread very easily throughout the chapters worldwide even in Ethiopia. If we think this is a minor problem like role players tell us, we should really think again. That is why I do not agree with Brehanu Nega’s idea of conducting a “democratic election” in North America before they restore peace and trust in the Diaspora that existed before the cration of KIL and KIC. It that happens, I think it will be a collection of dysfunctional chapters that are founded on animosity and mistrust. If there is anything that this divided tour in North America has accomplished, it exaggerated the differences that existed between the two groups before the tour. The money that was raised in North America could have also been triple the amount!
The Ethiopian people have said “Ande Honacheu Tageluna Ataglun” I am sorry to say this but as much as I was proud of their courage and defiance before they went to the dungeons of woyane, some of them let me down when they came out of it! The Ethiopian people want a united Kinijit! A party that practices a liberal democracy should have a built in system the fix the problem!

EZ,

What about the failed Coup against the honorable Eng. Hailu Shawel in North America?

If Kinijit wants to continue by being the voice the opressed mass then I would say this:

Suspend Dr. Nega and his 4 star fools who are now accompanying him in the disastorous North America tour from the CUD immediately.

For you EZ - because they have failed in their mission of deposing the popular Hailu Shawel all of a sudden it is business as usual. I say NO to traitors.

what do you mean when you said "That is why I do not agree with Brehanu Nega’s idea of conducting a “democratic election” in North America before they restore peace and trust in the Diaspora that existed before the cration of KIL and KIC"

of course, Dr. Berhanu Nega is right. Under no circumstances Kinijit should compromise its stand on democracy, transparency and accountability just because of KIC. KIC is a disbanded group. The engineer signed the letter to disband both KIL and KIC. If the members in the KIC want to be elected again, then they should join the Kinijit chapters in their local chapters and run for election within their chapters. Of course only if those individuals are free from any kind of corruption. Kinijit should not be a dumping ground for crooks.

EZ - If you are as genuine as you claim to be the first call should have been to resolve the serious leadership problem in CUD. Behind the mystery of division within CUD leadership is the fundamental outlook of the Ethiopian political landsacpe.

The progressive elements led by Dr Berhanu, Birtukan and others are ready for political alliance with OLF and ONLF. This group also has National Reconciliation that includes OLF and ONLF as the cornerstone of the future democratic Ethiopia.

The backward thinking group led by Hailu Shawel, on the other hand wish to keep OLF and ONLF out of the political equation. Hailu and cohorts have no liking for AFD. Let the truth be told first in order for CUD to continue moving around in Ethiopia - the first thing to do is to unload Hailu and those few of his supporters. Hailu has become a liability... Cut him loose before he brings more damage to the democratic movement!!!

where did you read, Eng Hailu is against national reconciliation with any group? For your info the group Eng. Hailu is now associating with (Shaleqa Yoseph) is the one who signed MOU. So for you trying to make one group is against-AFD and the other is pro-AFD, is nothing but trying to create confusion in the public mind. Yes Kinijt wants a political solution that includes OLF and ONLF and any other political group and that is a good thing.

Don't underestimate Ethiopians, they can tell the difference between a smear campaign against one or the other group and genuine opinion.

anon 1:31 pm,

Hailu has done his homework rallying the Ethiopian people before Dr. Nega and Birtukan Midekisa can even think of an election.

Dr. Nega and his bankrupt Keste Damena beg Hailu Shawel and sneak in for the biggest show. Two years after they want to steal his hard earned work and an organization he helped creat with a lot of sacrifices. And they call that "ARADA POLTICS".

I would say suspend Dr. Nega and co-horts before they sale Ethiopia to the highest bidder.

I am not surprised by Hailu Shawel's reaction and sabotage against the progressive and forward looking leadership of Berhanu, Birtukan, Hailu Araya, and many others. The visionary Dr Berhanu with Prof Mesfin founded the "Rainbow Coalition OR Keste Demena" which laid down the formation of Kinijit or CUD NOT Ato Hailu Shawel as some want us to believe.

Of course Ato Hailu was kicked out of the All Amara Party by "Kegnazmatch Nequa Tibeb" and others so he used the founding of CUD as a platform to bring his agenda from the "All Amara Party". He joined CUD unlike his apologists he is not the founder.

Let us not go around the Bush but the fact is Ato Hailu resented the popularity and resourcefulness of dedicated young Ethiopian (who happened to be non-Amara) leaders liked by all.

The Ethiopian Agenda of CUD and AFD - Unity and Democracy - has been articulated by the like no other before by Dr Berhanu Nega's speech in Virginia.

On the other hand Ato Hailu's patronizing and contempt is revealed through his latest interview - divisiveness -which is his hallmark from all along his tenure that goes back to Wonji-Ethiopia, Shell Ethiopia, Minister of Dergue and last but not least in his role in the All Amara Party. The future of Ethiopia is with the likes of Berhanu, Birtukan, Eyoel, Hailu Araya and AFD. Regardless of his patronage, cut him loose for Ethiopia's sake - Ethiopia is worth saving!!!

Long Live AFD!!!

The dust settles in, may be it is time that we ask the real question to a given party.

CUD was built on the EPDRF’s arrogance and wrong doing; we admit we were mad and upset. So, we supported CUD.
Now, it is time to ask the “real” question to any political party. What is their alternative? What is their strategy to bring economical empowerment? What is the strategy about ONLF, Somalia, Eritrea? What is the direction of CUD? Where is CUD going?
We, the people of Ethiopia, would like to hear the “real” strategy. We would like to see if you bring a better solution to EPDRF’s leadership weakness and in what way?
“the enemy of my enemy is my friend”… no more!

The first thing to understand is one vote per person. CUD has extensive ideas about economic development and foreign policy, but first comes franchising the voter. You have one vote in the future Ethiopia; you can ask your questions. The people will wisely choose.

If Ato Hailu is as you described, why Brihanu & co. opted to form coalition with him??? To grab on their supporters and destroy the old parties??? To come to power on the sacrifice of the old parties?? If that is the case, these "progressistes" don't have any moral value???

Why they didn’t form coalition with UEDF??? It seems their (hidden) ideology is close to UEDF than AEUP or UDEP-Medhin!!

As someone indicated Rainbow was a yong party and has no any base except in Addis and Wolkite. It’s election strategy was to form alliance with the old parties which have a strong base in cities and rural areas: AEUP and UDEP-Medhin!! Once the popularity is gained in this way, the following strategy is to grab on their supporters in the Diaspora and then in Ethiopia and destroy the old parties to a point of no return! Are they going to succeed??? We will see it!

If you want to know the details of “Rainbow strategy” read this week Ethiopian Reporter edition on the page “Temoaget”!!

EZ,

I was hoping for long time that the Kinijit leaders could be able to solve their "differences" with the chairman Ato Hailu Shawel. I am 100% convinced that will never happen after listening Ato Hailu's interview in Kinijit Swiss Paltalk room. Why?

1. All he is talking about was about him. "I was not invited here", "I was not received at the airport", "I was not invited there..". Never did he talk about the real issues of the country's problems

2. He was extremely disrespectful to the 5 delegates, Dr Fikre Tolosa who is trying to make peace b/n the leaders and Shawel, to the participants in the Paltalk room. He disrespected Dr Fikre by saying that he never heard of this person's name and that he never talked to him. Of course Dr Fikre did not speak to him; he spoke to his gangs to arrange the meeting with 5 delegates. He disrespected the participants by getting angry at them and sayin" yeminagerew aygebachihum?" when questions were sort of repeated. He even disconnected the phone call, after about 20 minutes, without finishing the invterview properly. What a tragedy.

3. Last but not least he does not sound no where near a politician when he talks. He lacks the skills to use political jargons and expressions. He talks like anyone without any formal education. He makes statements that are fundamentally, logically wrong. For example he said that Collective Leadership is used no where in the world because that would mean that the party members have to convein for every SILLY matter. Which makes believe that he does not understand what collective leadership means and when it is supposed to be exercized.

My conclusion: GET RID OF THE OLD MAN AND MOVE ON. HE WAS AND IS A LIABILITY TO THE MOVEMENT.

Aleqa Birru do not make a hasty judgement. The party knows what it is doing. He lived a life of leadership and for me it is my first time to hear when he is criticized for inefficiency. Please read his resume. He consolidated the party to its modern perspective. He is an ideologue.Wait and see.He is a little furstrated but he will come up to his original spirit. Take his position and understand him.Look at the discrepancies at Home, in the party, here at the Diasphora, and to his health as well.
By the way do not call him an old man. He at least has a name.Let me cite you the History you learned.[I guess you did not learn our Histroy and Culture]. Ronald Reagan was a man after Washington. How old was Ronnie. Please get the gut of respecting your elders let alone these imprisioned for a noble cause of emanicipation.
I urge you to take away your words. Thank you

Ato Hailu Shawel's interview with Tensae Radio was very revealing as to his ability to lead CUD today or in the future. My observation is similar to the one above, he is all about Ato Hailu's ego..... I was not invited, I was sick etc ... well I wish him well as far as his health is concerned BUT let those who are healthy and able take over the leadership - When he is sick he has to delegate the Presidency to the Vice President - they can't sit and wait for him - that is the abc of democratic organization.

Listening to him was so frustrating - he is simply bent on destroying the rising stars of leaders like Berhanu and Birtukan no matter what - it felt like Lidetu all over again - so in my honest opinion the collective leadership of Berhanu, Birtukan,Eyoel, Gezachew, Hailu Araya etc are better off without him. The love and respect shown to our democratic leaders by the diaspora is a testimoney as to what Ethiopians want.

I don't even want to go very far but Ato Hailu Shawel's ego trip goes back to his years in Wonji-Ethiopia, Shell-Ethiopia, Minister of Dergue, and his role in the "All Amara Party". It is all over again - old habits never leave you.

Again I call upon all democratic forces to support CUD and the forward looking leaders of tomorrow's united and democratic Ethiopia.

I for one listened to Dr Berhanu Nega's speech in Virginia, W/t Birtukan's speech in Boston (the humility) and see a promising bright future for our country.

Long Live CUD and AFD!!!

Although I agree with your general idea, please let's be considerate also for the leaders. They spent 20 months in jail and since their release they have been on every day meetings in Addis and now this long travel. While all this sacrifice is their duty, we should avoid unnecessary open ended expectations. Think what the constituents say if they visit one town and cannot make it to another. These people have family obligations and have to win bread as well.
