Isolated Meles set to play the ethnic card again

The Prime Minister is telling his confidants that he wants Girma Birru to succeed him when he leaves power in the next election, according to EZ Post sources. As opposition to his rule from Oromos become stronger and stronger, Meles, the sources said, is set to use the carrot and stick approach to quash it. Putting Girma Birru at the helm and playing power behind the screen is an option that is being seriously explored by him. Such a plan will encounter serious opposition from the Sibhat Nega clan and many in the TPLF leadership, the sources claim.

Next Week:
-AP's Addis Ababa correspondent plays into the hands of the TPLF dictatorship
-With the ICRC expelled and WFP asked to leave, how difficult is life for Ogaden Ethiopians?
And More

What is wrong with an oromo becoming a prime minister?

You people remind me of the saying "Dimet menkusa ameluan atersam". How enlightened, liberal, and democratic you appear; you are not ready to see even a puppet oromo prime minister. You would be soiling yourself if there appears a genuine oromo at the helm.

Dear the above anoym:
Do not get EZ wrong. I am pretty sure you have have understood what EZ meant by that unless you want to split hair. Yehonike totaaa neger nehhhhhhh, nefetamm

Stop the tabloid style reporting. If this is what you dreamt overnight you could specifically say so.

There is no way you could have gotten close to Melese's confidant unless you are one of them or Azeb's "buna atattxi".

If you have a problem with a majority rule, come clean. In any case, the ethnic background of any leader is merely symbolic. The ordinary folks derive no benefit from that.

And another thing, what is your problem with ethnic representation? That is the fact of political life since time immemorial.TPLF's problem is simply that it is not implementing what it says. Sooner or later we have got to deal with that. If you don't want to address majority's concerns, you can have your dear Abyssinia to yourselves.

Do you have any doubt about Girma's ability to lead the country? If so tell us. Why should his being an oromo disqualify him?

You guys are totally getting EZ wrong.

Basically, Girma Birru cannot be considered unless it is to appease Oromos. EZ, you Amara chauvenistic garbage is showing its colors. First, I wonder if you would say the same thing if it was Addisu Legesse. Second, you so-called Oromo resistance is no greater intensity than the Amara or any other group. Bigotory is still alive. Afterall, how can a simple Oromo be chosen for his skills? I am so glad that such attitude and culture is 6 FEET DEEP buried in its arrogance. Lastly, you HAD WRITTEN PREVIOUSLY THAT MELES WILL NEVER LEAVE BECAUSE HE IS A DICTATOR. NOW?:) GUDE NEWE, YE AMARA CHAVINISM ASKEROSHALE. GET A CUP OF JIMMA COFFE.

He is the perfect candidate, believe me, he is our next PM and that is good for Ethiopia.

Anonymous said...

Isolated? I don't think so. The three musketeers, Sebhat, Bereket and Meles function in tandem.

You may not hear them hail "one for all and all for one", but these three guys solely, can break up the nation, or send the entire national economic out put to private money pits, or mobilize the national army to settle private feuds, and above all they hold the power of life and death over every single Ethiopian.

If you thought Meles is isolated, then you must also believe that he has a redeeming qualities, that caused his isolation. Which is totally the stuff of goof balls.

What is more, ever since the release of the leaders, you seem to have lost your direction, and may I say, your appeal. May be you need to take time off to clear up your mind and find new direction.

Folks when do we stop spinning to the Ethnic based garbage that Melese and his friends have sowed in that country.

Who cares what ethnic background anyone is from - What we should care about is the capability, of the individual and his desire to bring a better Ethiopia for ALL. Is Girma Birru one to do so? No and I am saying this based on his actions in the last 16 years, he is a puppet of the regime, simple!

What we should be concentrating on is not what Melese wants, but rather what each Ethiopian wants and desires as a society as a community -- the truth is if we have no vision of the change that we want and what we need to work on, then yes we will keep triping on what Melese wants to do.

Are we folks really committed to change and if so - Could we stop distacting ourselves with what Meles and his thugs plan and lets start seriously considering and working on what we desire. It is time to start asking ourselves What is it that I can committe? What can I do? What is needed from me and how can I help? Once we start assesing what we can do then we may stop talking and start being in action.

So it is not about Girma being an Oromo or Legesse being an Amhara or for that fact Melese being an Erteian. We have seen two Presidents being Oromo's with Nada benefit for Oromos, We have seen some idiots supposedly representing the Amhara's they have not done anything for the betterment of the Amhara's ditto for all ethnic groups. What is needed is a national agenda and not an ethnic agenda. We need capable people who care with ingerity who are intrested in building a civil society who would adress the needs of the people and country from bottom up. We need to look for solutions to our problems from all angles, we have a lot of work to do.

To the above anonymous,

In an ideal situation one would look beyond the ethnic back ground and move forward with a national agenda. Unbfortunately Ethiopia has not been, and is not, endowed with those conditions. Ethnic poltics has always been there. I do not care about the ethnic background of the above person. But for EZ to put out his ethnic background without any refernce to other attributes speaks volumes about Ethiopian politics. EZ is no exception. These attitudes are causes to the intenicine problem affecting the country. Ethiopia has to come to terms with its larger people if it has to move forward.

Anon @7:06AM,
You made my already great Sunday morning even better. As you correctly put it, TPLF's problem is simply that it is not implementing what it says - and if I may add, the serious problem we have today is that the Opposition has issue with TPLF saying it

If you will forgive a small ding, you could maybe cut down on the Azeb and buna comment....one can make an excellent point without, as you put it, turning tabloid.

ok, back to my Sunday morning freshly ground 100% Ethiopian buna :)

You Guys are really off the cuff. EZ gave us information, he never qualified it with yah thats great! or hell that is a bad idea! So why jump up and down to judge him as being anti this or that.

It matters not wehter Girma or Melese since the first would be a clone of the second or he would not survive. It has nothing to do with which etnic group they come from. As the Anon above stated we have had them from different ethnic groups and we have not seen them do anything for their own under "group rights" or for the rest of the nation.

These people are parasits that are all about themselves and no one else. Girma Birru maybe a educated and learned, but he has proven to be a server and not a leader under two bloody regimes that he has served. Is this what we want? if so why not let Melese the monster rule rather than having a surrogate who will try harder than the monster, just please him and his ditractors.

Lets be forward looking and work towards a better day where the peoples voices are heard and the vote is respected. Let our agenda be an agenda of reconcilation, understanding, compassion and justice. And not Melese's agenda of War and distuction. Lets make our reality and stop reacting to his reality.

Anonymous said...

well said. I can't put it any better than the above anonymous.
I guess that was what EZ was trying to explain. The whole point is not about the ethnic background of the successor, but it lies on whether he/she's elected by the people he/she's representing, or is he/she's a puppet/surrogate working for the gang behind the screen??

For us Oromos, it is very interesting to see both Kinijit (Amharas) and Weyane (Tegarus) trying to appease us. Kinijit made out of a blue Birtukan Midheqsa its leader and now Weyane tries the same procedure. Do you fool Abehsas really think that we Oromos can be decieved by such move and stop our fighting for our freedom? We just know Birtukan is mentally more Amhara than the biological Amharas and Girma is more Weyane than the biological Tigarus!!! Stop playing foolish, we know you well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear EZ keep up the good work as usual. Please ignore the weyanne cadres. Those paid Melse/TPlF weyanne cadres don't try to confuse us you know EZ has a great support for REAL Majority rule not the weyanne style one tribe controlled rule. What EZ trying to say is even though Meles gives the power to Girma he has NO any decision making power except to be used as a cheating tool by Weyannes and Meles/Tplf to promot their fake demcracy because the real arsenal power is in the hand of miniority TPLF hateful party as the following:

The military
Strictly speaking, the Ethiopian armed forces are Tigrean no less than the TPLF is Tigrean. The following list makes this argument abundantly clear.
Ministry of Defense
* Commander of Ethiopian armed forces - Melles Zenawi (Tigrean)
* Defense Minister is a non-Tigrean, but this position is constitutionally manned by a civilian, not a military person
* Chief of Staff - Samora (Mohamed) Yunis (Tigrean)
* Department of Training - Major General Taddese Wored- (Tigrean)
* Department of Logistics and Administration - Major General Gezahi Abera - (Tigrean)
* Department of Operations - Brigadier General Gebrzgiabher Mebrhatu (Tigrean)
* Department of Military Intelligence- Brigadier General Yohannes (John) Gebre Meskel - (Tigrean) …. Recently appointed as Deputy Commander of Central Command. This Department will also be commanded by head of operations Brigadier General Gebrezgiabher Mebrhatu (Tigrean).
* Commander of the Air Force - Brigadier Molla H. Mariam (Tigirean)

Under the Ministry of Defense there are 5 Ethiopian Army Commanders.
* Northern Command (HQ Mekele) - Major General Seare Mekonnen (Tigrean)
* North Western Command (HQ Baher Dar) - Brigadier General Abraham Gebre Mariam (Tigrean)
* Special Army Command (HQ Dessie-Bure Front) - Birgadier General Teklai Ashebir (Tigrean)
* South Eastern Army Command (HQ Harar) - Brigadier General Seyum Hagos (Tigrean)
* Central Army Command (HQ Shire Indasilassie) - Major General Taddese Wored (Tigirean - Agaw). Recently, Brigadier General Yohannes G. Meskel also Tigrean.
The Ministry of Defense has 28 Division Commanders.
* All but one are Tigreans
Division Commands have 106 Regiments.
* 98% of the Regiment Commanders are Tigireans
It can be safely argued therefore, that there is no Ethiopian national army but Tigrean.

b) The economy: The Ethiopian economy is controlled by two large conglomerates:
l The Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigray (EFFORT)
l The Ethio-Saudi AI-Amudi-family - Midroc Ethiopia
Of interest to my ongoing argument is EFFORT. We will return to Midroc at another opportune time.

Did you say, "WFP asked to leave". Was it WFP that that helped Woyane by dismissing the Red Cross story of 'deliberate food blockade to the civilian population, by the Government,in Ogaden?

I thought, and they too assumed, these UN type people would be spared. I guess we were all wrong. Woyane is 'Woyane' & will always be.

At this time what our people need is peace and democarcy. I am sorry on what some people are writing. Oromo bla bla ...Let me tell you I am from OROMO Tribe but I don't care who is on power. What I really care is what Ethiopians as a whole benefiting from the administration, including the Oromo. At this time there is nothing special for Oromo. when I say this I don't mean that Oromos are not suffering. We are suffering more than any other tribe at this time but that should not lead us to a wrong conclusion.

Let us fight Weyane together and bring peace to the poeple of Ethiopia.

What you people(the Guy @10:24) from oromo claiming is not clear for me.
so, you mean your question will not be answered if a man from the oromo group will go to power (either PM OR LEADER OF KINJIT) and you still dream of civil war? surprise.

Anonymous said...

Dear Anonymous @3:13,

Let me give you a piece of advise. Don't not bother what people like the guy @10:24 say. I think he is saying Girma and Birtukan are not Oromo. According to him for one to be called Oromo, the peroson should only fight/struggle for the people of Oromo only. Stupid idea.

I beleive that Birtukan is fighting for the people of Ethiopia, whereas Girma is serving for woyane (not for the people of Tigray).

Whosoever tries to dismiss political decisions as "ethnic" has the burden of showing that he is not a neo-feudal and neo-derg.

Neo-feudals, neo-naftanyas and neo-dergs have abused the term so much that we no longer know what they are really opposed to. We could never understand each other until you tell like six years old child about your opposition to the formal arrangement in post-derg era.
- Are you opposed to self-determination by peoples?
-Are you against Children learning in their mother tongue?
-Are you opposed to the use of local languages in a local civil service?
-Are you unhappy because you are inconvenienced because of learning at least one other Ethiopian language?

As a matter of fact, you ain't seen anything yet. The stage is already set for more to come. Try to adapt or perish.

We wonder the extent you keep on dividing peoples.I loughed the whole day how you go down to label a person at biological & psychological level.
In a few times ;we will expect to read you the physical, chemical and electro-magnetical analysis of birtukan and the rest of us.
Two tips from kolengawu:-
1)we don't trust you if you label Birtukan other than a "spirit" in your electromagnetic division.
2) & when once you start to divide, you will never reach to the end.

To Anonymous 5:19 AM:

What you have elaborated above is what Ethiopians have been saying for a long 16 years. In that you TPLFites and narrow ethno-nationalists are out of touch to the realities on the ground and oblivious to the blunder you are committing. It is not hard to decipher your intentions, as you are blinded with hate and suffer from a chronic form of inferiority complex that does not seem to end even after you took the helm of power. Your usual nauseating line is to drop the word 'derg' this, 'derg' that to distract genuine discourse. This is truly a copout and only thing that shows is you are running out of arguemnts. By the way, the derg also used to use these kinds of lame tactics of trying to dismiss arguements by invoking phrases/words such as, "anarchists", "former feudals" and "anti-revolutionaries", etc. This is a worn out tactic that losers use when they are cornered; and it is not any different with the new breeds of blind followers of the TPLF either.

If there is anyone that will 'perish' and decimate, it will be those who are not with the MAJORITY. If you have senses enough to look into that simple principle, you would not have uttered that nonesense.

Peace to those who deserve it!

To anon 6:45 AM,

Are you still going to base your struggle on ancedotes uttered over 100 years ago..? How sad one would sing the same old song over and over again. I am not saying old biases and stereotypes should be tolerated. On the contrary, they should be eliminated.

Our past, has never been perfect. It is what many nations go through. Nations go through those growing pains, and ours is no exception.
Due too many factors and historical developments, there was a time in our history, that we are not proud of. However, that was then, and we are in a different era and age in human development.

Harping on old wounds is not going to solve anything except dragging everyone to non-ending and unnecessary misunderstandings.

The most we can do is heal the wounds of the past and move on, as we can't re-live the past for EVER.

Respect among our Ethiopian groups is paramount and we should strive to achieve that once and for all. The solution to achieve that goal is to establish a democratic system where the will of all the people is exercised based on democratic principles. And not a fake 'democracy' that we have just witnessed in the recent past.

In this day and age, that kind of understanding is what is expected of every responsible human being, be it Ethiopian or otherwise.

I am willing to believe this speculation. Meles will not be running for PM come next election . . . whatever kind of election that is. He will still control the security apparatus, the army, etc from the back ground . . . (meaning outcome of election/s as well) Girma Birru (GB) is a trusted man as far as Meles is concerned. Remember he was whisked out of the ETC and made special advisor to Meles when charges of corruption were brought against many of his colleagues in ETC. How all of that corruption went unnoticed by GB is anybody's guess. But to the point, this grooming of the next PM tells another tale of why Meles “pardoned” CUD prisoners. It can be summed up in one word – Legacy. Meles knows full well that if he left office with CUD leaders in prison it would the black stain that will prevent him from getting the stature he wants from the international community. Despite his dictatorial qualities US and EU look at him as a partner and many western officials regard him as smart and an intellectual of sorts. They would like to see him end his Prime Ministership but they don’t want him disgraced or embarrassed. Their bargain is for him to remove that black spot and for them to support him in gaining international stature after he leaves office. He wants to be the Tony Blair of Africa, perhaps the chairman of AU when he leaves office. US and EU will support this bid. The international community will give Meles the redemption and respect he seeks but of course not Ethiopia. He can cover Ethiopia with and it won’t matter.

anon @1:58 PM,
Although your hypothesis seems at least on the surface, reasonable & plausible, it is unlikely that is the case.

1. as far as Meles is concerened visa vis the US and EU, he is no a 'nobody' and very easily replaceable.

2. Meles, is not only a brutal dictator, but is also a known TRAITOR that ever lived and ruled over Ethiopia. He has lost all credibility whatsoever in Ethiopia as well as internationally. Therfore, to think that he is looking for a 'legacy' is way off the mark and goes against his longstanding personal traits and deeds. Besides, he lacks any redeeming values and/or qualities to begin with; and he sure knows it very well.

Like any dictator turned traitor, the only thing left for him to do is what he does best; i.e. plunder Ethiopian resources and finaly beg his sponsors to spare his life after he is done with all the mess he has been capable of doing so far. And as far as the west is concerned, he is disposable and they will leave him naked soon, if they have not already started scheming to throw him out of their grace.
